The Community Organizing/Advocacy Specialist is a newly created position at Alliance for Justice’s Bolder Advocacy (BA) program. The Specialist will focus on Bolder Advocacy’s advocacy and community organizing capacity assessment and evaluation work. This position will manage and, with other staff, implement Bolder Advocacy’s efforts to identify, conduct strategic outreach to, and provide support to community organizing and advocacy groups throughout California, especially those serving low-income communities of color. The organizations will be trained and supported in using AFJ’s capacity tools (including ACT!, ACT!Quick, and PowerCheck) to assess and strengthen these organizations and build political power in the communities they serve.
The position is based in Los Angeles and reports to the California Director, with input from the Senior Advisor for Foundation Advocacy and Evaluation in Washington, DC who directs BA’s advocacy and community organizing capacity assessment and evaluation work.
Responsibilities:
- Conducts outreach efforts and maintains and develops alliances and partnerships with nonprofits and individuals engaging in community organizing and/or advocacy.
- Works with Alliance for Justice staff in the California and Washington, DC offices on the development and implementation of BA’s advocacy and community organizing capacity assessment and evaluation work in California.
- Coordinates outreach for and, with other staff, provides technical assistance on AFJ’s capacity tools. This includes tracking groups interested in and using the tools to ensure grant deliverables are met.
- Organizes and delivers in-person and web-based workshops and trainings on community organizing and advocacy capacity, including developing and adapting curriculum and handling logistics.
- Represents Alliance for Justice with local nonprofits, foundations, allies and the public.
- Writes, edits, and reviews materials, such as emails, power point presentations, grant reports, and outreach materials.
- Provides feedback and recommendations on how to improve AFJ’s capacity assessment and evaluation offerings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years’
experience in community organizing including planning and implementation of
campaigns, advocacy, outreach, working in coalitions, and planning events
- Existing
relationships with community organizing and advocacy groups through the
state.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication
skills, including experience in making presentations and/or leading
trainings.
- Spanish
language proficiency strongly preferred.
- Strong
interpersonal skills and positive attitude.
- Ability
to work independently and in a team.
- Proficiency
with basic office software and technology.
- Familiarity
with Qualtrics or other survey software a plus.
- Ability
to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Valid
driver’s license and ability to travel throughout California as necessary.
- Demonstrated
commitment to social justice advocacy.
