Organization: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia (an independent state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America) is dedicated to building and sustaining a constituency that uses the state-level political process to guarantee reproductive freedom for all, including family planning, sexuality education, maternal health care, and safe, legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, with a 501(c)(3) Foundation arm and a political action committee (PAC).

Position: NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia is seeking several part-time Grassroots Organizing Interns to assist our regional Community Organizers for 10-20 hours/week for a period of 8-12 weeks over the summer. These individuals will be responsible for assisting our organizers in preparing for several community-wide events over the coming months, including a number of tabling and canvassing outreach programs. In addition, interns will assist in building a stronger corps of volunteers through targeted programming.

Activities/Responsibilities:

  • Lead tabling events in the community to raise the organization’s profile and recruit new volunteers
  • Manage canvassing campaigns to highlight organization’s priorities in targeted communities;
  • Plan events for volunteers to increase group cohesion and expand the cadre;
  • Research opportunities for grassroots engagement in Virginia;

Desired Qualifications:

  • Support of the mission, vision, and work of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and knowledge of reproductive rights, health, and justice issues;
  • Experience in volunteering and/or volunteer outreach;
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated;
  • Outgoing personality, and an ability to connect with people of varying backgrounds;
  • Strong written and interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills;
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and most weekends during the morning;
  • Flexibility and a serious sense of humor.

Internship details/requirements: This is a part-time internship requiring 10-20 hours a week over the course of 8-12 weeks during the summer of 2017, with most responsibilities taking place during the day on Saturdays and Sundays as we reach out to Virginians at local events. Therefore, access to a car is preferred. Community organizers are based in Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia, so proximity to one of those areas is preferred.

Compensation: A stipend will be provided and/or we will work with students on receiving academic credit if applicable. Stipend amount will depend on numbers of hours/weeks available to work.

For more information or to apply, please send cover letter and resume to apply[at]naralva.org with subject line "Community Organizing Intern" by May 5, 2017. Please address your qualifications and your commitment to reproductive rights, health, and justice in your cover letter. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until filled.
