The Statewide Data Manager oversees our data tracking and usage across our issue organizing, member and leader development, electoral organizing and general organizational infrastructure statewide.
About the Texas Organizing Project (TOP): Founded in 2009, TOP, has become the leading statewide organizing group in Texas, advancing racial and economic justice through community and electoral organizing. Our programs are anchored in the three largest metro regions of the state: Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. We have a base of over 275,000 members and supporters who are reflective of Texas’ growing population low-moderate income families of color. Through on the ground organizing, grassroots leader trainings, direct action, policy advocacy and electoral engagement we have made gains in policy solutions and public investments in neighborhood infrastructure, family sustaining jobs, affordable housing, community schools, health access and immigrant rights. TOP also runs the largest independent grassroots electoral field operation in the state, activating over 200,000 voters of color each election cycle.
Job Description: The ideal candidate has experience in community and/or political organizing, strong analytic and quantitative skills, a passion for progressive politics, experience in integrating text, social media and other outreach into a data base, and experience working with spreadsheet and database programs.
The Data Manager is responsible for overseeing and streamlining data and data analysis across the organization’s three offices. TOP is a fast-paced organization, engaging hundreds of leaders and community members across the state on a daily basis and working to build out lists across our counties in order to grow a broad base that can move 1 million people in issue and electoral campaigns. We are seeking an individual who can ensure that we are capturing, tracking and continually assessing data from our issue and political campaigns organization-wide. Most importantly, the data manager will ensure that data is used strategically and efficiently to maximize our impact working with our statewide organizing and political directors.
Primary Responsibilities:
– Manage all database structures and processes related to organization-wide needs including political and community organizing, in particular the Voter Activation Network (VAN)
– Adapt and improve member and fundraising databases to meet the needs of the organization as they evolve
– Create and manage reporting/data entry processes and integrity across all three offices
– Co-manage the other data managers with their local supervisors
– Work with political campaign directors to ensure that GOTV data are integrated into our main systems
– Work directly with campaign coordinators to ensure that data is being used strategically to maximize our organizing efforts
– Have experience using counts and crosstabs in VAN
– Vigilant management and oversight of database to improve data quality through enforcing protocols, quality-control checking, as well as finding and fixing errors
– Ensure ongoing training of staff on database use
– Analyze data and provide reports and assessments to management team on a regular basis to improve organizing and campaign efforts and methodology
– Oversee and manage all data needs for phone canvass and door-to-door canvass, cutting targeted voter lists, etc. Ensure the management and analysis of turf performance to maximize long-term impact
– Coordinate with the communications team to ensure we are layering communications with lists organizers are using and to ensure that we are capturing data from social media campaigns
– Incorporate new technology like mini van, virtual phonebank, etc.
– Manage the donor and fundraising data base
– Investigate, promote and integrate new ways to use data in social media organizing into our work
Qualifications:
– Strong commitment to social, racial and economic justice
– Candidates should have experience in community organizing and/or direct voter contact programs especially in low-income communities
– Ability to work well with all religious, cultural, ethnic and social groups
– Candidates should have experience in the use of data and analytics to drive effective decision-making
– 5+ years of experience with databases, in particular VAN as well as other online organizational databases
– Strong quantitative and analytic skills
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical subjects to non-technical individuals
– Experience with spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel required; Knowledge of Microsoft Access preferred
– Experience managing staff including data entry staff or volunteers a plus
– Diplomatic, professional approach to problem solving and the ability to think independently and creatively
– Must be a self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently; willing to work sometimes long, irregular hours and to travel as needed
– Familiarity with IRS rules governing 501(C)3 and 501(C)4 organizations and maintaining appropriate boundaries between them in terms of data and other relevant information a plus
– Willingness to learn and grow within the TOP culture
– Familiarity with Civis Analytics, Periscope Data by Sisense a plus
– Spanish language skills a plus
Location: Houston, Dallas or San Antonio
Salary Range: $45,000 – $55,000, depending on experience
