SUMMARY:
NextGen America is seeking passionate and hardworking candidates to join our youth organizing program in Wisconsin, working to engage young people in local and national fights to prevent climate disaster and promote prosperity for all Americans. This role will be focused on managing our organizing program in Wisconsin as part of this ambitious effort.
In Wisconsin, this effort will focus on organizing young people in targeted cities, regions, and campuses to be more politically active. Our work will engage young voters in the state legislative process, in actions to hold federal and local office-holders accountable, in voter registration efforts, and in building towards a massive 2018 electoral program. This cycle’s program will include traditional electoral organizing tactics such as door knocking, phone banking, peer-to-peer text banking, and more.
NextGen’s Cities Organizing Program focuses on mobilizing young, non-student voters around local political issues in order to elect progressive champions. The Cities Organizing Director will run this program statewide and report to the State Youth Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage a team of field organizers statewide, often remotely
- Provide technical support and training directly to field organizers and their teams, including volunteer fellows and captains
- Hold organizing team accountable to goals and monitor progress to goal on metrics like doors knocked, volunteer shifts recruited, voter registrations gathered etc.
- Manage the implementation of campaign plans and effective organizing tactics including traditional grassroots voter contact, creative earned media actions, and event planning and turnout
- Ensure organizing team meets all data and field reporting deadlines
- Provide training on earned media strategies and coalition-building to achieve legislative or issue goals
- Provide input & strategic direction regarding local and state issues and campaigns for opportunities to engage in
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- 1-3 years of field organizing and management of organizers and/or regional field organizers
- Experience managing managers a strong plus
- Driven by a strong work ethic
- Ability to adapt to evolving priorities and manage several tasks simultaneously
- Previous youth organizing experience not required, but a strong a plus
- Very well organized; excellent written, verbal and presentation communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and outside organizations and be able to multi-task without sacrificing quality of work
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to foster a cooperative, team-oriented work environment
- Experience working with VAN or Votebuilder
- Experience with both issue and electoral organizing
Bonus points for:
- Experience organizing in communities of color and prior training in anti-oppression, equity and inclusion organizing
- EveryAction experience
