SEIU
Healthcare 1199NW is a progressive, social justice-oriented healthcare union in
Washington State made up of more than 26,000 nurses, healthcare, and mental
health workers. We unite together to improve the quality of patient
care by raising standards in the workplace, advocating for workforce training
funds for healthcare workers, and standing up for affordable healthcare for
all. We fight for economic and social justice for working families in our
communities and we strive for organizational leadership that reflects our
diverse membership including women, people of color, and LGBTQ
individuals.
The legal
department plays a vital role in supporting our union.
Job Duties
- Advise officers, members,
delegates and organizers;
- Provide analysis and counsel on
legal issues including collective bargaining, representation and other
issues;
- Write, review, and edit briefs,
reports and correspondence;
- Train and direct organizers to
ensure union members stand up and enforce their contracts and their rights
in the workplace;
· Conduct administrative hearings and
arbitrations;
- Interpret, analyze and apply labor
agreements to fact patterns;
- Organize and manage databases and
documents;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduation from a law school
accredited by the American Bar Association
- Active membership in the State Bar
of Washington
- Valid driver's license, car and
insurance
- Ability to work long hours
including evenings and weekends as necessary or travel.
The ideal
candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Activist with commitment and
experience fighting for social justice
- Union experience preferred
- Knowledge of labor and employment
law, with mentorship available
- Two years prior legal experience
preferred
- Excellent writing and analytical
skills
- Ability to establish and maintain
rapport and credibility with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, as well as with professional,
technical, administrative and service workers
- Effective written and verbal
communication skills
- Ability to listen actively and
articulate issues
- Proficient in Microsoft
applications
