Summary

 

The Communications Director works closely with the Senior Vice President of Campaigns and Strategy, the President and manages the communication staff to drive a vision and to execute an aggressive and creative communication strategy. This position’s duties includes serving as a spokesperson for the organization, the chief architect of  long term and day-to-day communications strategy and operations as it relates to our campaigns, our mission and our brand assisting in assessing and responding to incoming media requests and implementing an aggressive media outreach program that lifts up NARALs campaigns and long term vision for reproductive freedom. The ideal applicant will coordinate activities with other departments, NARAL’s communications consultants, and generates press materials as needed.

 

Responsibilities

·       Direct and provide comprehensive campaign communications services for NARAL Pro-Choice America, including message development and testing, paid advertising, internal and external message guidance and earned media;

·       Act as spokesperson for the organization in conjunction and partnership with the President;

·       Create and implement broad communications and branding strategy for NARAL Pro-Choice America;

·       Supervise Communications and Media Outreach Associate and Communications Internship program.

·       Responsible for coordinating the work of subordinate staff along with the ongoing training and development of team members, building NARAL communications capacity across the network (national and state affiliates), and ensuring strategic media outreach occurring at the state and local levels;

·       Manage the relationship with our contracted media and communications consultants and serve as their primary point of contact;

·       Oversee the pitching and production of op-eds, letters to the editor and talking points on a variety of issues related to NARAL’s mission nationally and in the states;

·       Continual cultivation of media relationships with both state and national reporters in order to speak on background and effectively shape stories and media narratives, as well as regular on-the-record conversations;

·       Oversee generation of press materials, statements, talking points, and speeches;

·       Serve as liaison to other departments on communications and media related issues;

·       Contribute to the planning of media events for the national office and state affiliates as necessary;

·       Schedule background calls between NARAL Pro-Choice America experts and reporters or producers;

·       Participate in ongoing planning activities with internal groups, state affiliates, and coalition partners, key internal committees and task forces;

·       Compile and develop media reports for internal distribution and communication to the board and external audiences; and,

·       Prepare NARAL Pro-Choice America spokespeople for media interviews, and staff media appearances.

·       The position reports to the Senior Vice President for Campaigns and Strategy.

 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, manage, and lead staff on major programs and projects—from concept to implementation;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise personnel towards position goals and within deadlines;

·       5 years media-relations and communications experience;

  • Existing network of advanced print, media and blogger relationships a plus;

·       Significant on-the-record experience;

·       Firm grasp of today’s traditional and social media environments;

·       Capitol Hill, advocacy, or campaign experience a plus;

·       Attention to detail and accuracy;

·       Excellent written and oral communications skills;

·       Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to handle multiple projects simultaneously;

·       Commitment to NARAL Pro-Choice America’s goal of building a political constituency to protect and promote the right of all women to exercise the full range of their reproductive choices, including abortion; and,

·       A commitment to contributing to a workplace environment in which diversity is valued and supported.
