JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is an organizing position located in Northern New Jersey with the Health Professionals and Allied Employees. The organizer is responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Willing to work long and irregular hours
- Dedicated to social and economic justice
- In possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership
- Ability to work in a team setting
- Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus for organizer position
- Ability to speak additional languages a plus
- Union organizing experience preferred
Applicants must be flexible with regards to geography/be willing to relocate and may require extensive travel around the state.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Organize and mobilize workers
- Lead Organizing Meetings
- Attend weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
- One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
- Perform administrative tasks necessary for organizing (such as maintaining databases, producing materials, and correspondence)
- Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
- Take direction from lead organizer or organizing director on daily and weekly activities to grow HPAE membership and accomplish goals
- Identify, recruit, train, develop and inspire healthcare professionals through one-on-one and group communication
- Build and maintain organized communication structure in the workplace
- Develop and implement successful tactics to win union organizing elections against employer opposition
- Organize community coalition and other political actions to advance our movement
- Help to organize and run large actions such as picket lines, strikes, and marches
