ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Office Management
Ø Manage the daily operations of the legislative office, correspondence, and constituent issues;
Ø Coordinate and oversee the Delegate’s schedule, including meetings with constituents, organizations, and community events;
Ø Staff the Delegate at applicable meetings and events;
Ø Maintain a flexible schedule that may include early morning meetings, evening events or meetings, and weekend events or constituent office hours.
Ø Represent the Delegate at community events and meetings as applicable;
Ø Draft constituent correspondence, press communications, and newsletters for the Delegate;
Ø Maintain the Delegate’s social media accounts.
· Constituent Services
Ø Respond to constituent inquiries and requests;
Ø Act as liaison with state government agencies and congressional offices as necessary to resolve constituent issues.
· Session & Legislative Agenda
Ø Help the Delegate create a legislative agenda;
Ø Track legislation and other developments and brief the Delegate for floor work, committee work, and outside House-related activities;
Ø Monitor major legislative developments providing the Delegate with information on pertinent votes, talking points, and research;
Ø Act as liaison with committee and agency staffs;
Ø Supervise interns and administrative staff as applicable.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree or higher education level in Political Science or similar field is preferred. However, relevant experience can be substituted for a degree. Other training in legislation and the legislative process is beneficial. This position is not entry level and requires a minimum of two years previous office or administrative experience.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:
o Knowledge of the legislative process in Virginia and of the House of Delegates organization and procedures;
o Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment;
o Ability to work effectively and tactfully with the public, press, lobbyists, government officials at all levels, and other legislative staff;
o Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize often competing tasks, and time management;
o Excellent writing and research skills;
o Ability to work independently;
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office and NGP VAN.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
o For most of the year, work is performed either at home or at the Delegate’s office. The latter may be at a designated work space at the Delegate’s business/place of employment or their home office. The position it based in Northern Virginia.
o During Session, Delegates and legislative staff reside in Richmond from early January to the end of February or early March. The House Clerk’s Office does provide a per diem for living expenses while in Richmond in addition to the regular salary. Mileage is also reimbursed.
o As a state employee, this position includes healthcare coverage and retirement benefits.
