I too had similar feelings. August 1 is a day that sticks in my mind. Before I had heard of Jim Carroll I knew it was Jerry Garcia's birthday. When Jim mentioned his birthday in Forced Entries he also mentioned Garcia so both birthday boys have stuck in my mind. I was thinking of how old he would be now as I'm only 4 years younger and I thought about his turning 77 today. Wouldn't that have been nice.
