Thanks to all who have responded to my dilemma. I think I have not made myself clear.

I know there are a lot of artists on these lists. I appeal to you.

The object in question is a deflated mylar balloon. Jim probably received it for a birthday or something.

A mylar balloon is not art. The only thing that matters as far as the "art" is concerned is whether an artist decided to "do" something with it. The artist in this scenario is Jim Carroll.

Jim Carroll decided to do an "experiment" with the deflated mylar balloon. He used a sharpie to write "WEIGHT" on the deflated balloon, and he used the least amount of tape possible to attach the deflated balloon to the wall of his apartment.

The whole point of the thing was to see how long it would take to fall down.

Do you understand my problem?

I acquired this object when Jim moved out of his apartment in Chelsea. It had not yet fallen off the wall. He had zero interest in taking the experiment with him.

How do I preserve this thing?

Cassie

I missed this one. I would either tape it to the wall of my apartment, or tape it to the inside of a shadow box or something...a small frame? And hang it.

Why not take it down and bring it to your place. Then put it up using the original tape or the same brand taped the same way. That way you will be continuing the same experiment. I'm assuming that whoever lives there wants it down. I guess they are not Jim Carroll fans.

LOL! No, I have it in my house, taped to a wall.

Every time I look at it I wonder if I should do something different to protect it  while also displaying it (it makes me smile). Most methods for protecting it would mean making it just a deflated Mylar balloon with WEIGHT written on it in Sharpie ...

I am now thinking that I should continue to display it as it is, taped to my wall, continuing the experiment, "waiting" to see how long it takes for the "weight" of it to cause it to fall.

Thanks, all!

Cassie

Hello friends,

I am sorry to say that our own Dennis Driscoll has passed away.  Dennis was a New York original, an Inwood guy through and through.  RIP Dennis

I am wishing all of you good health and peace.

Thank you, Gio, for sharing this. I heard yesterday and just couldn't bring myself to share with the group. Dennis was such a central figure in this group, such a treasure. And that Inwood accent!

Damn. And he won't even get a decent service during the lockdown.

So ... You know what? I would really like for everyone to check in on the list. Please? I need to know people are OK.

Love to all of you!

Cassie

Sorry to hear about the loss. It’s never an easy moment made more difficult when the closure is incomplete.

I’m doing okay. My wife is going crazy because on top of the daily crunch, I’m making it more difficult for her by going through chemo during a pandemic. She flips out if I try to touch a doorknob. At the house. From the inside.

Stay safe with heads up looking forward.

Very sad.   Thank you for sharing, and heartbreaking that a proper service isn't possible.  Trying to stay safe up here near Toronto, stats saying that our numbers are still pretty low compared to projections, and they're saying that cases are going to start falling very shortly.  Definitely doing better than a lot of other areas.  Hope everyone is staying as safe as they can.  This list is definitely a welcome distraction, even when it's bad news.

Listening to John Prine as I read about Dennis’ passing. He was always fun to correspond with.

really really sad to hear about dennis.  dear soul.  i think dennis originally joined sometime in 1999 if i remember correctly - a presence in our lives for more than 20 years!

i'm doing ok in downtown manhattan, though i hardly ever leave my apt, and the last time i did to get some milk, broadway was entirely deserted at about 7.30 pm.  sending everyone my love.
