rest example to check/disable slaves?

I need to do some updates/reboots on jenkins slaves. Does anyone
have a handy example of how an external script could check if a slave
is busy running a job, disable if from starting new ones, and
re-enable it after the maintenance work is complete so this can be
automated without disrupting builds?
