Jenkins / Bug JENKINS-56593
Jenkins git clone fails intermittently
Issue Type: Bug Bug
Assignee: Mark Waite
Components: bitbucket-plugin, git-plugin, kubernetes-plugin
Created: 2019-03-18 09:31
Environment: Dev
Priority: Minor Minor
Reporter: Milind Sonawane

We clone three repos in our pipeline from BitBucket:

  1. Shared Libraries
  2. Jenkinsfile
  3. Source code

The build fails intermittently with logs shown below:

Finished: FAILURE

On triggering the same job manually after some time, it succeeds. I do not mean to say here that the poll scm is the issue. Sometimes it succeeds. We are using Jenkins in master - slave configuration. For the master, jenkins/jenkins:2.168 image is used and jenkins/jnlp-slave:3.10-1 for slave. This entire setup is running on Azure Kubernetes Service and deployed through Helm. For git, we use Git plugin version 3.9.3

Re: Jenkins git clone fails intermittently

That would usually be an indication that there is a configuration issue on the server that hosts the Bitbucket repository. It may be rejecting ssh requests or rate limiting ssh requests. I adjusted the ssh configuration (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) of MaxSessions in my git server from the default of 10 to 1000.

It might also indicate a network connectivity issue from the build agent to the Bitbucket ssh server. Since you're running in Kubernetes, it seems unlikely (at least to me) that it is a network connectivity issue.

Jenkins is the only application running in the pod. You can take a look at screenshots for details about java versions.

Re: Jenkins git clone fails intermittently

We found some logs from the pod where Jenkins Master is running. Please check Edit 1. Even if we were to scale up the memory, we are not sure what is consuming the memory? Why is it not cleared?

I don't have experience with the cgroups out of memory killer and how it interacts with Docker. My questions are asked from a position of ignorance rather than experience.

A stackoverflow article suggests that cgroups will only do that if more memory is allowed to be reserved than is actually available. Maybe there is a setting that will stop the allocation of more memory than is available?

Another stackoverflow article suggests that reserving more memory than is available might be due to requesting a slightly too large memory amount for the docker image.

Hello Mark,

We made the following changes changed the memory limit from 4GB to 8GB, that did not help. What really worked for us (partially) was downgrading the version of K8S plugin from 1.14.9 to 1.14.8. The number of failures has reduced post this change.

Re: Jenkins git clone fails intermittently

Thanks for the update Carlos. We suspected the same. While the JVM is requesting memory, we are not sure why it is demanding so much memory in the first place. We tried finding out using `top` command, yet there was nothing malicious or suspicious running. This is a new log we got:

ALPN callback dropped: HTTP/2 is disabled. Is alpn-boot on the boot class path?

This issue was seen in issue JENKINS-53131. I guess updating the java version might help in this case, like your blog and this issue suggest.

Upgrading to JDK 11 has not helped. Will try using the web hook based approach now.

The job fails with following message:

Picked up _JAVA_OPTIONS: -Xmx2048
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Too small initial heap

Increasing this param does not help, will go towards the same problem again.

Re: Jenkins git clone fails intermittently

Update on this issue, following changes are made:

  1. Instead of poll SCM, the projects were configured to use webhooks (We have over 100 pipelines in Jenkins).
  2. Replaced SSH by HTTPS for cloning the git repos.

The failures have not been seen for one week after applying this config.
