Jenkins / Bug JENKINS-35229
Plugin manager Updates never completes
Change By: Alex Nederlof
I noticed I did not get a whole lot of plugin updates lately. Turns out the update mechanism doesn't complete anymore. It says "Update information obtained: 3 mo 7 days ago". When I request new update information via "Check now " , the page never completes but hangs on https://jenkins.magnet.me/pluginManager/checkUpdates

The log just prints this
, and then stops :

{code}
May 31, 2016 8:38:56 AM WARNING hudson.model.UpdateSite$Plugin getNeededDependencies
Could not find dependency aws-credentials of awseb-deployment-plugin

Restarting Jenkins did not help. Is there anything else I should try?

Issue Type: Bug Bug
Assignee: Unassigned
Components: core
Created: 2016/May/31 7:29 AM
Environment: Jenkins 2.6 and 2.7, on Ubuntu.
Labels: plugins
Priority: Major Major
Reporter: Alex Nederlof

I noticed I did not get a whole lot of plugin updates lately. Turns out the update mechanism doesn't complete anymore. It says "Update information obtained: 3 mo 7 days ago". When I request new update information via "Check now, the page never completes but hangs on https://jenkins.magnet.me/pluginManager/checkUpdates.

The log just prints this:

Restarting Jenkins did not help. Is there anything else I should try?

Re: Plugin manager Updates never completes

Nothing in logs, to Updates check "completes" with failure.
There should be better logging in Jenkins at least

I'm sorry to say that after the initial request, it logs nothing more than what I put in the description. I'm looking at the `logs/all` endpoint, in a window of 2 hours after the request.

Which logging level do you use? Maybe FINE could help

Re: Plugin manager Updates never completes

I recently had the same problem on one jenkins instance. It's running v 2.167.

On other instance running on same version, it didn't happen. Could I get some help on how to fix it?

The thread dump is attached as thread.txt (output of <jenkins_url>/threadDump)

Thanks.

I have the same problem using the release 2.176.1

I can't say if the problem is new since my recent update, since I didn't upgrade plugins for a while.

I have to instances of Jenkins, both on 2.176.1 :

  • the first one is checking updates whitout any problem. I could see that the called URL is /pluginManager/checkUpdatesServer.
  • the second one hangs on /pluginManager/checkUpdates. On this one the requested URL is /pluginManager/checkUpdates.

Why is the link different on these two instances of the same Jenkins release ?

When I change the requested URL on the second one to /pluginManager/checkUpdatesServer, all works fine and i can see the available updates.

My problem was solved actually. Sorry, I forgot to close the issue.

It turned out it was downloading the options via the browser, instead of on the server (this is a setting, but I cannot find it anymore).

The use of checkUpdates or checkUpdatesServer depends on a configuration in /configureSecurity/ : Plugin Manager > Use browser for metadata download.

When unchecked, checkUpdatesServer is used, which solved my problem.
