There may be more in the main Jenkins log from when that happens. It could be an SSL/TLS related or network issue between your gitlab instance and Jenkins.

Sharon, it seems like you have this problem for almost a year now.
Wish I could help. So updating to the latest Java version and checking ownership do not help?

You might also try the suggestions offered on stackoverflow http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21245796/javax-net-ssl-sslhandshakeexception-remote-host-closed-connection-during-handsh , or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/31883713/i-received-javax-net-ssl-sslhandshakeexception-remote-host-closed-connection-du , or here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/29911073/javax-net-ssl-sslhandshakeexceptionremote-host-closed-connection-during-handsha

Some of the things that those answers suggest include questions like:
  • Is your gitlab server using a self-signed SSL certificate?  If so, that can complicate things and may require changes to accept that self-signed certificate
  • Is your gitlab server being accessed through a proxy?  If so, that proxy might not be completely transparent, and might be disrupting communication
  • Is your client running Java 7 and your server refusing TLS 1.0?
  • Do you have certificates installed and configured on your gitlab server?
Unfortunately, I've never configured a gitlab server, though I am confident the Jenkins git plugin and git client plugin support gitlab, since they are regularly tested using a public gitlab instance.
