Google Summer of Code 2021 - Call for project ideas and mentors!

Hi all,

You may have already noticed a few threads about Google Summer of Code (GSoC) in the developer mailing list and other Jenkins channels. We are going to participate in the program this year, and we are looking for project ideas and mentors. GSoC is a great opportunity for us to work with some brilliant students who seek mentorship in open-source projects.

If there are any missing features you would like to see in Jenkins, GSoC is a great opportunity to get this project done. Suggesting project ideas for your own plugins is also fine! GSoC mentorship And yes, it is really about complex projects which are valuable to the Jenkins users and the community. Here are our GSoC 2020 projects:

• Git Plugin Performance Improvements by Rishabh Budhouliya

• GitHub Checks API for Jenkins Plugins by Kezhi Xiong

• Machine Learning Plugins for Data Science by Loghi Perinpanayagam

• Jenkins Windows Services: YAML Configuration Support by Buddhika Chathuranga

• Custom Jenkins distribution build service by Sladyn Nunes

GSoC requires significant time investment (~5hrs per week in May-August), but it may also be a great experience. Mentors work in teams, and mentoring does not require deep Jenkins development experience. Please see this 2020 announcement blog post by Martin d'Anjou for more details. 

We recommend sending your project ideas early, there are already students exploring the ideas. You can also find some documentation on our site: current project ideas, project idea submission guide, expectations from mentors, etc.  If you have any questions, we have a Gitter channel and a mailing list. We also have office hours for Q&A on Wednesdays at 3PM UTC.
