[GSoC2017] - Status update

Hi all,

On behalf of the GSoC org team I am happy to announce that we are going to apply to Google Summer of Code on this year. We will officially apply on Feb 6 after FOSDEM. Currently we are working on the application docs and on the landing page.

Unfortunately I am not able to attend the today’s governance meeting, so I decided to post the GSoC 2017 status to the developer mailing list. At the governance meeting the discussion will be driven by Tyler.

Current status:

1. We decided to participate in GSoC 2017.
• Timeline: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline
• Org admins: Baptiste Mathus, R Tyler Croy, Oleg Nenashev, Steven Christou
• There are some differences in the project plan, but generally the project approach is same
2. We are working on the application documents and the Website update

• Website - some changes are in progress, Oleg will submit a pull request by Feb 03 EoD
• We are going to push the changes and to finalize the application on Feb 06 during the Jenkins Hackathon at FOSDEM
3. We are looking for mentors and project ideas.
   
• The official call for mentors will be posted tomorrow (Feb 02)
• The approach will be pretty similar as on the previous year though we will invest more into student selection and community bonding phases
  
4. Oleg is working on getting special swags for GSoC2017 participants, rather a background activity right now
