Upcoming changes to docker official java images

Heh, nice to see this change.
But indeed it may cause various kinds of unexpected regressions.
IMO we should pin the image version in LTS packaging until it is soak tested well in weekly releases.

Seems like dropping support for Alpine images will cause a major regression, won't it?

no more OpenJDK 8 Alpine images (Alpine/musl is not officially supported by the OpenJDK project, so this reflects that -- see "Project Portola" for the Alpine porting efforts which I understand are still in need of help)

I'm not a big fan of the Alpine images anyway, but it is currently available as an image from the Jenkins project.

Time for me to "get it done" and submit the JEP proposing a process to select platforms that the Jenkins project will support.
