If you can read this, the Google Group has been reinstated as quietly as it was
banned.

I think it might be time for us to be moving on :(

Does groups.io support mailing list operation or is it only a web based service? (My 10 second  scan of the home page on my phone didn't seem to answer the question :) )

Cool - seems reasonable to me then. Would it be best to move one list first as a trial or would that be to confusing to people?

Moving one group might be wisest.

I won't promise that groups.io will solve all our problems, but my impression is that it will be easier to get support from them. It appears that getting support from Google is like shouting into a paper bag.

Would it be interesting to find a googler to find an opinion and/or options on that? Just because it would be awful for Google itself, which often uses/adverts Jenkins, as being dumped by jenkins itself

This has been tried for ~3 days and was almost the first reflex… To no avail (that I know of). And this is unfortunately not the first time.

I believe Discourse would be a great alternative. A lot of the new crowd thats coming in via Blue Ocean haven't interacted with mailing lists before so there is a chance here to bring more people in to the community that way.

Discourse can be self hosted or we can pay them to do it. I am sure we can find a sponsor for ether of those things.

Personally I'm -1 for Discourse. Discourse is a great forum but I think the mailing list way works best. If groups.io is anything Google Groups, you get the best of both worlds where people can either use email or have at it via the website if they wish.

Richard.

Last time I looked at this it wasn't easy to have LDAP integration (and impossible hosted), which I would consider a prerequisite to using Discourse.

Can't Discourse be used via email as well?

From memory the emails you receive were more like notification messages (with all kinds of guff about links to the page etc in). However they may have changed since I last used. (Basically would like to see as close to a like for like in terms of email readability and replyability)

It looks like there's been a huge amount of work to get Discourse to act like a mailman replacement

https://github.com/discourse/discourse/pull/2012

Perhaps we should collect some more requirements from the community then evaluate more deeply and make a call based on that information?

By that measure we should have moved from JIRA[1] years ago :-)

So long as I can post from the web using a mobile phone I am fine with a replacement.

Well, the main difference for JIRA is that we know where to look at. In GGroups case, we have nobody/nowhere to shout on ;-)

One advantage of something like discourse is splitting things up into sub topics
* Jenkins Usage
* Plugin Development
* Jenkins Development

Puts everything in one place, but it might get too tempted to split things into tiny tiny groups.
I figure it could help with people posting to the wrong mailing lists.

I am mostly a reader so will not vote on this. But i need the email interface. There is some structure to it that makes it possible to follow.  Please do not move to something that allow for even less structure to users. Example, Jira do not show threading on generated emails.  And for you that do the moderation(Thank you!): You should consider how much of the spam is trapped by google before you need to consider approval.

I am only a reader so do what you think is best!
