We had a very successful experience with last year's Hacktoberfest contributions to the Jenkins project.  This year we need help to prepare for Hacktoberfest and to review Hacktoberfest contributions during October.

You can read about the 2019 Hacktoberfest to see some of the types of things that could be done as part of 2020 Hacktoberfest.

We need additional help to prepare for Hacktoberfest.  We're looking for volunteers that can help with:
  • Plan, host, and present at one or more Jenkins Online Meetups for Hacktoberfest,  similar to the 2019 welcome session
  • Recommend and describe featured projects as pull requests to the Hacktoberfest page
  • Identify good first issues in Jenkins plugins, Jenkins core, and Jenkins docs (Jira issues and GitHub issues)
  • Write a Hacktoberfest blog post similar to the 2019 blog post
  • Review Hacktoberfest pull requests
Volunteers, please reply to this message or comment in the Hacktoberfest gitter channel at https://gitter.im/jenkinsci/hacktoberfest .

Thanks,
Mark Waite

Hi,

I will try to help with organization this year, but my bandwidth is likely to be very limited. Still, will do my best to help with this effort.

Some additional prep steps are required:
  1. Archive the 2019 landing page
  2. Adjust the event kit and local meetup guidelines in Hacktoberfest docs. I;d guess we do not want to recommend local meetups this year
  3. Consider doing the Hacktoberfest "Hall of Fame", similar to how we did for the UI/UX hackfest. https://github.com/jenkinsci/ui-ux-hackfest-2020
Best regards,
Oleg

Hi Mark and all,

Is there a ETA for the Hacktoberfest page updates?  In my DevOps World talk I advertise Hacktoberfest, and it would be great to have the 2020 landing page ready by the next Tuesday. Not the end of world if it's not ready, no pressure. I might be able to contribute a few patches on Monday/Tuesday if nobody else does it before, but unfortunately my time is very limited these days.

Best regards,
Oleg

I'll do my best to submit a pull request over the weekend to create a 2020 landing page.

Ack, thanks for the update! Monday is totally fine, no need to rush to get it done on the weekend.

Regarding the project ideas, we have a few common featured project suspects:
  • Jenkins Configuration as Code
  • Jenkins Core
  • Documentation migration from Wiki
  • Terminology cleanup (agent/controller/denylist/allowlist)
  • Artwork
I also plan to submit an entry for Jenkinsfile Runner. Maybe other contributors would be willing to submit their projects.

Some ideas and descriotions can be also taken from the 2020 UI/UX hackfest page: https://www.jenkins.io/events/online-hackfest/2020-uiux/

BR, Oleg

Hi all,

Gentle reminder about featured projects.
Right now we do not have many of them.

Best regards
Oleg

Someone should write a comment @ https://dev.to/devteam/whos-looking-for-collaborators-hacktoberfest-2020-jl89 which got shared by hacktoberfest account today.

https://github.com/jenkins-infra/plugin-site/issues has a couple good first issues labeles but nothing major comes to mind.

Is there anything UI/UX related? Like maybe moving some individual widgets from prototype go vanilla js?

Jenkins Docs SIG has made a great start on good first issues at https://github.com/jenkins-infra/jenkins.io/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22good+first+issue%22 .  We have many more issues that I need to triage and then mark them as good first issues.

Special thanks to Jhonatan Morais for his work on the wiki migration project and creating issues to move the project forward.

Thanks for the pointer.

I posted https://dev.to/markewaite/comment/15ehk as my attempt to invite people to contribute to the Jenkins project.

I will submit a few items today (Jenkinsfile Runner and Custom WAR Packager, maybe some relevant UI/UX hackfest items). Marky and Alex were also going to add a featured project for terminology cleanup.

https://github.com/jenkins-infra/plugin-site/issues has a couple good first issues labeles but nothing major comes to mind.

It would be great to add it for JacaScript contributors. We could add more tasks for better GitHub Info source support, for support of plugin logos, etc. There is an old EPIC with a few open tasks: https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/browse/WEBSITE-637

I justed added a proposal to work on the helm chart as well: https://github.com/jenkins-infra/jenkins.io/pull/3819
I would take care of reviewing items in a timely manner and would also help any new contributors with pointers of what can be done and to answer questions around helm. Low hanging fruit would be to add some of the examples in https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1RS8PwlR_FzxYypBlwtp4LcZls8hr3dG_4KJ65U00Xlo/edit#slide=id.gc6f80d1ff_0_0 to the chart documentation.

Due to heavy spam and bad actors this year, digital ocean decided repos have to be opt in.

tl;dr for a PR to be counted by hacktoberfest if:
Submitted in a repo with the hacktoberfest topic AND
during the month of October AND (
  The PR is merged OR
The PR is labelled as hacktoberfest-accepted by a maintainer OR
  The PR has been approved
)

I will set up topics for participating repos today

I added the "hacktoberfest" GitHub Topic to all featured projects we have. Maintainers are welcome to add topics to their repositories if they want to add projects.

The new change will require somebody to spend time and to monitor cross-repository project submissions (terminology cleanup, docs migration), and to add GitHub topics to repos with the permission of maintainers. Ideally we should modify project descriptions to restrict them only to participating repos.

Best regards,
Oleg
