FYI, Jenkins has been approved to participate in next round of Outreachy.

Next step is to identify 1-2 project proposals and mentors & volunteers.
There will also be a general Outreachy Twitter chat on 9th Sep 2019.

ICYMI, the Audit Log Project, which has been the focus of the last 2 Outreachy rounds, has been released (https://plugins.jenkins.io/audit-log) and we had a nice preview of it at the recent summer demos meeting https://youtu.be/41dhyFC5Iak?t=1454

Regards,
Tracy

Hi Tracy Miranda,

The Outreachy organizers have approved Jenkins to participate in the current round of Outreachy!

The community coordinator can edit community information (description, funding, etc) here:

https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/jenkins/

Each mentor will need to submit their project proposals through the Outreachy website. You cannot list projects on an external page.

Coordinator and Mentor mailing list
-----------------------------------

You will receive an email from "mentors...@lists.outreachy.org" that will prompt you to subscribe to the mentors mailing list. Please find that email and follow the link to confirm your subscription. The mentors mailing list is used for important Outreachy organizer announcements, and is a private list open to any Outreachy applicant to ask questions of Outreachy mentors. It's important you receive these communications.

*Please make sure to set a filter for your email*

Setting a filter for the mentors mailing list ensure that all communication to this list goes into your inbox. If you use Gmail, it will often categorize mailing list emails under the 'Promotions' tab.  You will need to set a filter for 'lists.outreachy.org' to ensure it ends up in your Personal inbox.

Private Outreachy Chat
----------------------

You will receive an invitation to a private Outreachy chat server. The server will be used during the internship to communicate with interns and mentors. You can also use it to ask questions of other mentors or the Outreachy organizers.

Important Dates
---------------

Aug. 20, 2019 - Initial applications open for applicants
Sept. 9, 2019, 4 p.m. UTC - #OutreachyChat on Twitter
Sept. 24, 2019 - Deadline for mentors to submit new projects
Sept. 24, 2019 at 4pm UTC - Initial applications deadline
Oct. 1, 2019 - Approved applicants start making contributions to projects
Nov. 5, 2019 at 4pm UTC - Final application deadline
Nov. 14, 2019 - Deadline for mentors to select interns

Initial Application Period
--------------------------

The Outreachy initial application period opens on Aug. 20, 2019. After that date, you can promote your community to applicants by linking to the community projects list:

https://www.outreachy.org/apply/project-selection/#jenkins

Promoting your community helps encourage applicants to complete an initial application. Only applicants who have an approved initial application will move onto the contribution period. The initial application deadline is Sept. 24, 2019 at 4pm UTC.

Please see the Outreachy promotion page for sample emails and tweets, posters, presentation materials and Outreachy logos:

https://www.outreachy.org/promote/

#OutreachyChat on Twitter
-------------------------

#OutreachyChat will take place on Twitter on Sept. 9, 2019, 4 p.m. UTC. We need mentors and coordinators to participate in the chat. We also welcome participation from Outreachy alums.

Every round, we have an #OutreachyChat on Twitter to encourage people to apply to Outreachy. It's a chance for applicants to get to know you and for you to promote your project. Please read about the format of the chat and what questions the @outreachy account will ask mentors:

https://www.outreachy.org/promote/#outreachychat

Contribution Period
-------------------

All Outreachy applicants will be notified of the status of their initial application when the contribution period starts on Oct. 1, 2019. Details about community projects will only be visible to applicants with an approved initial application.

During the five week contribution period, Outreachy applicants will make contributions to Outreachy projects. You should read more about how to prepare a list of tasks for the contribution period:

https://www.outreachy.org/mentor/mentor-faq/#define-starter-tasks

Applicants will record their contributions through the Outreachy website. Eligible applicants will see a 'Record Contributions' button on the community landing page next to each project proposal. During the contribution period, you can send them the following link to ask them to record their contributions:

https://www.outreachy.org/december-2019-to-march-2020-internship-round/communities/jenkins/

Final Application
-----------------

Once an applicant has recorded a contribution, the next step is to make a final application for each project they wish to apply for. Only applicants that have recorded a contribution and created a final application for a project will be eligible to be selected as an intern for that project.

You can send applicants the following link to ask them to create a final application:

https://www.outreachy.org/december-2019-to-march-2020-internship-round/communities/jenkins/

There should be an 'Update Contributions and Apply to This Project' link visible to applicants on that page. Mentors will need to work with applicants to create a project timeline, taking into account the time constraints for both the applicant and the mentors.

Application Dashboard
---------------------

Coordinators and mentors can see which applicants have recorded a contribution and made an application on the community application dashboard:

https://www.outreachy.org/december-2019-to-march-2020-internship-round/communities/jenkins/applicants/

Each project has an applicant details page, which is linked from the community application dashboard. The project applicant details page lists applicant's information, time commitments, recorded contributions, and application text. Co-mentors can sign up to mentor a selected intern by following the project links from the community application dashboard.

Thank you for volunteering to help Jenkins participate in Outreachy!

Hi Tracy,

Is this program restricted to larger sized projects, or are they also interested in having the mentees work on discrete features/issues for existing projects?

I'm willing to mentor or co-mentor again this round. I have an idea
for a project to submit as well.

Hi Craig,

Discrete features & issues work well, just need to be scoped and enough to cover the 12 weeks of work for someone new to OSS but with some existing programming skills.
Additionally other types of projects (besides code) can be specified e.g. docs or performance measurement & analysis.
Main thing is to come up with something useful that is also appealing.

Here are some projects from other communities that have been submitted https://www.outreachy.org/apply/project-selection/
