Jal Website Updates

Hi, I wanted to let everyone know some work has been done to update the justanotherlanguage.org website and the Tutorial Book.

Rob_CJ had an interest in updating the Tutorial Book and has done a great job fixing it (Thanks Rob). The tutorial book PDF is compiled with Dita OT 1.8. As an added bonus to Rob's efforts, Dita compiles HTML files for updates to the website.

I was able to upgrade the website from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9. Thanks to Rob's Doughtier there is a cool new Jallib logo and a new header on the website.

If anyone wants to add Tutorials to the website or PDF, the tutorials are in /doc/dita/ and they can be edited with the old Syntext Serna Free 4.1.x (Contact me or Rob by email if you need to know where to get it).  Syntext Serna is no longer a free software so we continue to use the old version which I believe was open source at the time (source is on github).

After you are satisfied with your added tutorial or changes, Rob or I can promote it to the web site and/or a new Tutorial Book version.

Currently changes are automatically updated on the test site test.justanotherlanguage.org, and we push the changes manually to justanotherlanguage.org. Hopefully this will prevent us from breaking the site.

Thanks to Matt and Rob for these updates. Some very useful information for us all to take in.

I can't imagine that I'll ever get to writing libraries but the Style Guide gives some very practical advice that I will attempt to follow in my projects. I did notice though that in the Code Layout section there seems to be a problem with the Indent your Code section in that the Good code is not indented! I guess it should look like:

Good:

var byte char

forever loop

   if serial_hw_read(char) then

       echo(char)

    end if

end loop

Hi Fraser,

You are right. The style guide does not show the correct style 🙂

We need to look at it. This page is created differently than the pages of the tutoral book. If you look for example at the bottom of this page of one of the tutorials you see that the style guide was applied (but not completely correct if I look more closely 🙁).

Hi Fraser,

The style guide is now part of the tutorial book (html and pdf version) and the indenting issue was fixed.

Also the new pdf version 0.5 of the Tutoral Book can be downloaded from the website. In this book I added a reference to the PICKitPlus software and after a short discussion with Matt I will also add the PICkit2/3 standalone program as one of the programmer software options. The later is not in this version.

Last but not least I will also add the installation of the Visual Studio Code plug-in made by Sunish for people that need a JAL editor on Linux.

Maybe (not sure yet) I could add a summary of the JAL language. Ik received the info from Kyle in another documentation format but I am not sure if I can use that.

I could add some more libraries to the Tutorial Book but then it might become too big. I think the best is to document the most commonly used libraries but then the question is which libraries are the most commonly used ..... USART, IIC, SPI and PWM are already explained and those are sometimes mentioned on the Jallib and Jallist groups.
