Hi,

As the Jakarta EE tutorial is a resource that ultimately helps the entire ecosystem and is of value to all the vendors. I wonder if there's anyone who can spare some resources to finally get the Jakarta EE 9.1 tutorial actually released.

We've had amazing contributions from volunteers already, but we need that last extra push to actually get it released. The project has been stalled for the last ~7 months now, waiting for those last tiny bits to get done.

Especially with Jakarta EE 10 on the horizon, it would be good if the released tutorial is not more than 2 versions behind.

Kind regards,
Arjan Tijms

Arjan, can you give us a sense of what needs to be done — is it just the release? If so, what does that require?

To be honest, that was my challenge too, aside from time. It is not clear from the issue what needs to be done. Providing some high level guidance on the work may encourage newer folks to pitch in with greater confidence?

That's exactly my question too tbh. It's unclear what a release means exactly or how to do it. Part of the challenge is finding out what needs to be done, why the current version can't be released, and how the release process works.

All I know is that the issue has been hanging around for like forever, and nobody seems to know how to get the release done and/or has been able to. Hence why the help is needed so badly.

Kind regards,
Arjan

Hi,

I'm not sure exactly what advice that is needed...

The tutorial is released to its own GitHub Pages (gh-pages) branch. So the performing the actual release is pretty straightforward. When you have done the necessary updates for a version (e.g. 9.1), go ahead and tag it and run the Maven build with the publish-site profile.

Formally, maybe a release record should be created for it under the Platform Project (since that is where the repo is linked today), but it can also be considered as documentation for a release (which it is), and be updated freely. So I don't think all that formality is needed here.

Hi,

Thanks Ivar, that should be a start for anyone wanting to work towards releasing this. If we don't get any volunteers I could give it a shot, but I still have a little over 30 other projects on my plate right now to look at first.

Kind regards,
Arjan

Don’t you need to be a committer on the corresponding GitHub project to do this? Otherwise, if all the work is done, this seems very trivial.

Can someone give me the correct rights to do this? Since it not a specification strictly speaking, I can be a committer right?

Ivar Grimstad

Yes, you are right. Some of the tasks must be done by a committer. The rest can be done via PRs.

- Update tutorial: Anyone can send Pull Requests to master branch, a committer merges
- Set tag: Committer
- Build tutorial: Anyone
- Publish release: Anyone can send Pull Request to gh-pages branch, a committer merges

Currently, the tutorial is part of the Jakarta EE Platform project. Since it is a specification project, there is extra paperwork needed.
I think we should consider moving the tutorial over to a normal EE4J project, possibly together with the examples. It really shouldn't be under the platform.

I can do the committer tasks now, just let me know when all updates are done and we are ready to set a tag for a release.

Could you kindly work with Ivar to ensure the release happens? If you are a committer already, perhaps you could simply do the steps Ivar has outlined?

Thanks indeed. Please do reach out if this gets stuck again.

Since this in fact is a specification project, I don't want to get into dicey territory by contributing code directly. I should still be able to help in other ways.

Thank you, Dmitri,

You're awesome!

I myself care about the tutorial a lot but I'm now working on Batch spec to help get it ready for EE 10. I may be able to help with the tutorial after Christmas.

The tutorial for Jakarta EE 9.1 was already ready and Ivar Grimstad released it this weekend.

Now I started to study how to prepare it for release 10.

Thank you,
