where are all the boats? (map)

Is there a chance we can create a map to visualize where all the J/92 and J/92s are located around the world? Not where the owners live but where the boats are based. Maybe just the location of the marina/harbour/club or even just the towns. This could be as rough or as detailed, as private or as public as we wish. 

I can think of many potential benefits but maybe I leave it here for now just to start a discussion.

I did that with Google Maps quite a few years back. I can dig up the details and see if it’s still there. 

I created a database of boats and owners including as much history as I could find. This provided the home port info for the map. 

 I haven’t updated the database in years, but would be happy to turn it over to a new maintainer if someone has the interest.

Good morning this map is interesting .

I see my boat placed where the ex owner used to live and the boat still carries her old name. It had been renamed before I bought her . #72.  Was SS Claire.  And now PEP

There is another boat JLance #05. The location is where the owner lives.

There are another J92 not listed and a J92s not listed either. 

Can the names and locations be corrected ?

I love this!  It would be wonderful to keep the history on each boat as we update, if that would be possible.  Maybe the current info could be added to the Description area?  

Tim, thank you for volunteering to take this on!  If there’s some reason it would be helpful for you to have info from the Admin side, please let us know.  

What do you all think about setting up a Google Form or some survey mechanism for everyone to put in their current info so we don’t clog up the forum?  Or maybe everyone likes to see the thread as it takes shape?

Additions and corrections are very easy. I just renamed and moved #14 to
Stamford, renamed yours to PEP and renamed Navicula to Runaway. I've
given you, Tim, and Phil edit rights to the map.

Tim Roche has volunteered to take over the database, so I'll work with
him to get that going.  The forum archives should be replete with
information on boats changing hands over the past dozen years, should
anyone want to start culling it for updates that Tim can make to the
database.

The database has tons of ownership history.  It might be unwieldy to try to bodge all that into the map data sheet, unless someone is inclined to script the creation of the map from the database. Not sure it'd be worth the effort.

I could, but I really can't. :)  It was worthwhile to make a couple of changes just to familiarize myself with managing the map. Mark, Tim, and Phil have edit access and I'll leave further changes to them.

Folks should feel free to chime in on this thread with boat name/location/owner updates, and the team can register the updates on the map and/or in the database as spare time permits.

#91- now named Vixen is owned by EJ Haskell (me), Shane Bouslough and Jim Weil. She and sails out of Old Greenwich Yacht Club in Old Greenwich, CT. 

I believe we are the 3rd or 4th owners. It was originally in Florida and presumably (from Todd's map) named SlumpBuster. We purchased it from Newburg, NY, on the Hudson River and kept the name Vixen (changed her logo/image from a buxom babe to a sly fox!)

Hey all, almost in numerical order here, haha: Spirit is a J92s, #56.  Based in Newport, Rhode Island.  I've had her since 2010.  Previously she was owned by a really nice guy, Tom Aquino, named Rum and Cola, and freshwater sailed on Lake Carlisle Illinois.  

Bk Bk I'm interested in putting something together for the 92/92s crowd in the local Southern New England region.  I see some boats down in Connecticut I wasn't aware of.

Yes - J92s sail number 37, sMOOch is headed to Maine.  The original owner owned a dairy, hence the unique capitalization.  I do not know if the new owner (4th owner) plans to rename her.

#37 Flying Fish 1993 J/92 SD It is the last shoal draft J/92. Purchased in Annapolis as Caliente. And it was previously in New Orleans. Purchased and then shipped to Windsor Ontario ( near Detroit)  and then converted back into a competitive racer.  PHRF rating 108  The boat keel is 4'9"

Hi Tim, My J92 is hull #17 and is named Firewater and resides in Dana Point, CA. Previously, it was in Slidell, LA with the same name. Previous to that is was named Caddywampus in New Orleans, LA. Thanks for taking over this from the nice work Todd did!!! We have four J92's in So. Cal. and Lenny Gordon (Sunshine) are trying to get together with the others for a race in Long Beach in 2021. It would be a blast if we could pull it off.

I have j92s I think hull number 61, which doesnt appear on your list.
It is now known as Brenda’s J and lives at Hornet Services Sailing Club, Portsmouth Harbour in the UK.
Havent a clue how to update the map so will leave to you unless there are more instructions and happy to try!

The first 3 letters are the builder (Tillotson-Pearson at the time). If I recall correctly, the European build identifier is "JCF" for J/Composites-France.

The next two digits are the boat model (92).  The next 3 digits are the hull number (014), and the final 4 places indicate when the boat was built (2nd half of 1993 is my interpretation).

So your hull number should be the first 3 digits after 'xxx92'.

Thanks for the info,  I will need to look into this a bit more. This number was taken from a plaque on the main bulkhead but obviously there is an error somewhere.

This boat is also a classic J92!

Brian,

I suspect there may have been a misread or transcription error on your hull id.  The last two digits indicate year of build, '97.  Hull #41 was definitely built in '93.

From the records I've collected over the years, I think we can say that #89 was built in '96 and #108 was built in '99. That would lead me to believe yours is likely somewhere between #90 and #107. 

I'd have ventured a guess of #91, since the 9 could have been mistaken for a 4 somewhere along the way. However, that boat is now Vixen in Connecticut (unless their number is wrong too!).

If you have a photo of the embossing on the transom, that would clear it up.

The boat has had 4 previous owners that I know of and with the 3rd owner it had a full repaint. There is no sign of the number embossing on the hull or deck, I'm guessing this was lost in the repaint!  I agree with you that hull #41 and year of build of 1997 don't match.

I have just joined the group.  I have a J92s, called 'Alecto', hull #78 (sail number ITA 55555 - though she is British Registered) based in Malta (on Google Maps she is literally outside the KPMG building in Pieta, South West of Valletta).  She was built in 2008 and bought by an Italian, I have a strong suspicion looking at the old key fob that she was 'Johnny Come Lately' shown on the map placed in Lavagna, east of Genoa in Italy.  She then was bought by a Frenchman, renamed as 'Rollmop's 4', who kept her in Marseille, South of France.  I bought her in December 2019.  Mark Camilleri (owner of PEP and group member) and I with two others sailed her from Toulon to Malta in 2020, which was quite a magnificent cruise.  

Can you please update the map.

J/92S ”Vitesse”, lies Norra Hamnen, Lysekil, Sweden. Not sure of the hull number, but she was built in 2006.  Two owners in Oslo, Norway before we sailed her down to Lysekil on the Swedish west coast in June 2019. Such a lovely boat!

Please note you can remove ‘Johnny Come Late’, J/92s currently marked as east of Genoa in Italy, as that would be a double count.
