I am replacing my original Sea Frost fridge with a DC fridge, so I no longer have use for these two vertical ice trays. They fit against the holding plate.

Can anyone use them? Free for the asking.

Tom I will take the trays. Mine leak after repeated fixes.
UPS or Fed Ex them to me and I will send you a check for the shipping.
Thanks

I can definitely use those Tom, if nobody else has claimed them.

Tom.  What manufacturer did you choose for replacing the sea frost engine driven unit?   I’m trying to decide on a replacement also.

I went with an Isotherm 2351. It includes a self-pumping thruhull, which does not require a pump and is super quiet.

That was the easy part. The hard part was rebuilding the fridge box. The original box was very poorly insulated. It had about 1-1/2" of foam, which in many places was only casually attached to the box itself. We tore it all out and built a custom box. It has 7" of insulation on the bottom, 5" elsewhere. We were able to reuse the original fridge box top, lid, and corian counter, which cut down the costs.

Here's a photo essay of some of the steps. If you click through the photos, there are captions describing what you're seeing. Unfortunately, I wasn't very diligent about photographing everything.

Tom Becker did the majority of the work. Brilliant craftsman!

Incidentally, if you want to take this project on, Tom has the mold and could easily build more boxes.

Hi Tom,

Where are you installing the "self-pumping thruhull"?

It will replace the regular sink thruhull. But that will have to wait until the boat's spring haulout.

Hi Again,

I installed an Isotherm system with "self pumping" thru-hull on a previous boat and found both the energy efficiency and refrigeration power remarkable.  I have contemplated an install on our J42 Cayenne, but have been reluctant to deal with the existing kitchen sink thru-hull.  Do you foresee removing the integral Marelon thru hull and sea cock?  Will the Danfoss compressor be located near the thruhull, or under the aft head sink?  I find myself daunted by these challenges to a potential J42/Isotherm project.

Yes, the Marelon thruhull will be removed, the Isotherm SP thruhull installed in its place. They are the same hole size. The swing space for the handle is slightly different and will require trimming the plywood floor under the sink.

Besides its quietness and efficiency, a big advantage of the SP system is that it does not dump its heat in the cabin, so there's no reason to mount it in the cockpit locker. It's also quite small. I was able to mount it on the wall between the sink and drawers, keeping the runs of the refrigerant lines very short. The old compressor was mounted on the floor, so this frees up that space.

Again, the mechanical side is easy. It's the box that's hard. Roughly:
  • One day taking out the old systems;
  • Two days for two people taking apart the locker, fiddles, corian counter, and removing the old box;
  • Tom Becker spent about five days building the mold, then laminating up the new box;
  • A day installing electrical power, running a new conduit;
  • Two days for two people installing the new box and new insulation;
  • One day for two people to reinstall the locker, corian counter, and fiddles;
  • One (short) day installing the new compressor;
  • Two days on miscellaneous stuff: revarnishing bungs, covering the holes left behind by the old controls, etc. I'm still on this phase, so it might take longer;
  • A day installing the thruhull (yet to be done).
As you can see, the mechanical systems are a small part of the work.

Truly impressive and ambitious infrastuctural upgrade, plus a clever allocation of space.  I've already lengthened the kitchen drawers, which eliminated the waste space above the water heater.  Glad you found a good use for it.  Swapping thru-hulls makes me nervous, but it will be an elegant system that keeps ice cream
at spoon-bending consistency.  Looking forward to hearing further about the results of your efforts in future posts.

Thanks,
Reed

I took the lower drawer face off and hinged it back to the framework at its bottom edge. I ditched the drawer.  Then in the drawer cavity,  I built a floor over the water heater resulting in a more than doubling of the useable space. Great for oversized or oddly shaped pots and pans.

Hi Bill,

Pot storage above the water heater is a good use of that space.  The J42 is full of odd corners for storage, much of it unconventional, improvisational or hard to access.   Drawer assemblies are (as on almost all yachts) space wasted in the name of having a proper looking drawer.  The salon storage in the bins behind the settee cushions is massive, hard to pack, and a threat in case of a knock-down (unless secured).  The cockpit locker, even with a second 31 gallon fuel tank, is immense.  The aft Lazarette is a contortionist's nightmare to access, but useful nonetheless.  Although small for a 42 foot cruising boat, the J42 can carry a load and still perform.  Versatility seems to be one of the J42's most useful virtues.

Tom,

How is your new reefer system working out? I installed a new controller on our seafrost that shows temperatures and it is struggling in the Annapolis heat. When I got to the boat last night, the temperature in the boat was probably 110 degrees and the sun was shining on the blue hull where the reefer is. Not a good combo.

Cheers,

Barry

Hi, Barry,

I'm very happy with it, but then it hasn't been subjected to anything like the kinds of temperatures you're describing --- the water temperatures in the PNW rarely rise above 55° or so. With that in mind, it's using about 15 Ah/day. I expect that number will be closer to 40 once we get to Mexico.

Those dark hulls sure are pretty, but I guess there's a price to be paid!

Is the waste heat from the compressor vented outside or is the compressor breathing it’s own hot air. Separating them can vastly improve the efficiency.

On my boat?

The heat from the compressor is absorbed by sea-water. The hot side runs through coils in a self-pumping thruhull. See the Isotherm 2351

On my boat the compressor is in the port locker.

I vented the waste heat from my SeaFrost Shore assist compressor into the aft head. The port locker stays cool and the head is always warm and dry. I located the vent register high, blowing inside the wet locker curtain. If if it gets too warm we just open the ports. Seldom does it get too warm in Michigan. It worked fine in the Med where the temps and humidity were very high, including the water temp which often matched the air temp.
