For the preventer system on my J/46 I have a length of spectra that is permanently attached to the back of the boom (at the bottom) and when not in use runs forward past the vang with an eye spliced into the end. I have a piece of heavy duty shock cord attached to the gooseneck, that runs back and hooks into the spectra with a plastic hook to keep it snug under the boom.

We have a very similar setup on our J/46. We use low friction rings instead of snatch blocks though. As Al said, the loads can be huge and it’s easier (and cheaper) to find a really beefy and rated low friction ring on a Dyneema strop than a heavy duty snatch block. We used the John Harries Excel worksheet to size everything.
As for one vs two lines on the boom, we have one and I don’t mind switching it for gybes. We made our the preventer sheets long enough so you can release the preventer tension, gybe, and then switch control lines on the other side after the gybe. But be careful – with the J’s and their Dorades and dodger, etc… it’s easy to wrap a loose preventer line around something in the dead of night and not realized it. But having only one to worry about makes that a bit easier.
