Hi Everyone,
I am in the process of sourcing a used rudder for a J/44. Before commissioning a new build, I wanted to check with the class community to see if anyone has a spare in storage or knows of a boat that is being parted out.
If you have any leads on used rudders or yards that specialize in J/44 refits (beyond the usual suspects like McMichael), please let me know.
Fair winds,
Luca Paderni

Out of curiosity... what happened to the old one?

If you can’t find a used rudder Competition Composites Inc can build you a new one.
They are located in Canada and their work is great.

Would you know a ballpark for what they charge for building one?

I'm curious to hear what happened to the old one also, if you don't mind sharing.

I have a spare, it's the old design, though - not as deep and much longer in the chord. I don't really have a use for it, so if you want to come and get it, it's yours.

I spoke with John Rae about a new rudder a few years ago when I was replacing my bearings, and think the cost was somewhere in the $10K range - of course that would be CAD, so convert to your local currency, and factor in the passage of time both in terms of inflation and my memory fading :)

Cheers,

Chris

last year a few orcas decided to have lunch with it… we had a spanish shop repair it but the work was not really of the highest quality… so, biting the bullet and looking for a new rudder

I had a new rudder bult for my prior boat (SC50) by Larry Tuttle *Water rat" in Santa Cruz.  He's brilliant, and the rudder was a work of art. That was about $8000

Hi Chris,
the original rudder was severely damaged by orcas last year off Gibraltar and the repairs we did in Spain where not really of good quality.
I am now biting the bullet and we are looking for a new rudder.

Thanks for the generous offer. of your old rudder, really appreciated!
Just a couple of questions, if you do not mind:
- how would you describe the state of the rudder?
- where is located?
If you prefer, you can reply directly at luca.paderni AT gmail.com
Cheers,
Luca

Hi Luca
Contact CCI because they might be able to use your old rudder post if it is not damaged. To build a new rudder on it. This would reduce the cost.

Thanks for the suggestion, Larry.
The boat is currently in Italy. So, I am not sure the freight costs will make this option viable.
Cheers,
Luca
