Hey all,

Has anyone repowered their j40 and have any wisdom to share? Our original Volvo 2003t is about ready for either major work or a repower. If we repower, ideally we’d like to do so with a minimum of other mods (eg prop shaft, exhaust system, engine compartment, etc)…

Curious for others’ experiences and recommendations.

Thanks!

We repowered our Volvo with a Yanmar 3JHE over twenty years ago. The refit was pretty straight forward. Our engine is under the galley. There is a thread somewhere with lots of input on this subject—Wayne, Southern Cross (former Pipe Dream) hull 75.

We repowered on very short notice.  The engines available were a 50hp Volvo and a 40hp Yanmar.  We went for the Volvo, thinking it would be less of a hassle.
Well, no.  There was a lot of rework that had to be done.

On the other hand, now that it's in, it's got a TON of get-up-and-go!

Search the thread history. There have been a number of good discussions on this, even fairly recently, for the j/40

No hassles swapping out the Volvo.

Hi all,

Update on our engine situation is that I was able to source a new turbo, mixing elbow, and hard pipes for the original Volvo engine, so no repower after all. After this experience, we’ve realized that it would be very prudent to add a freshwater flush to the Volvo engine. Curious if anyone has done this? Perko makes a product called the Flush Pro that looks like it could theoretically work, but not sure if anyone’s installed one? Ideally, I’d like to install a 3 way valve at the raw water inlet connection that I could connect a garden hose to so we could flush the engine after use. Has anyone done this? Let me know how you got on.

Sail fast,
Michael

Ach! I forgot to pick one up for the J. On my old boat, I just use a simple tee on the intake hose: barb x garden hose connector x barb.  A gasketed cap closes it off when not in use.  A short garden hose is kept in the bottom of the locker next to it.  It’s literally one minute’s work to draw in a pail of fresh water. Or, more usually, antifreeze mix for winterization.  There are nice days to sail in the winter, so it’s good to have an easy way to quickly re-winterize.
