Hi all - We’re taking our Seattle-based J/40 around Vancouver Island this summer and on the hunt for an inboard sheeting working jib for offshore use. It’s a cruising trip, though we do race the boat and ideally this sail will double as a #3 for casual club racing when breeze is up. If new, thinking we might spec a tri-radial with a slightly high clew and higher quality dacron cloth. Probably horizontal and furling batten pockets.

Our current #3 is old, laminate, and sheets between the upper and lower shrouds, which doesn’t feel right to me for nighttime offshore use, especially with smaller crew size.

Two questions:
1. Anyone out there have something fitting this general description you’d be willing to part with?
2. Any recommendations on dimensions / specs for a sail like this you’ve loved?

Many thanks for responses to this, and all collective wisdom this group provides.
Cheers,
Murph

Hi Michael,

My wife and I sailed around Vancouver island, counter clockwise, last summer on our J/40. It is an amazing adventure that I cannot recommend highly enough. Our boat is 100% kitted for cruising, our headsails are a high clewed #2 on the furler and a staysail, so I can't offer much help with the #3 you're inquiring about. If you have any questions related to anything about the voyage around Vancouver island, please don't hesitate to reach out, happy to pass on what we learned.

You're on the right track to be thinking about a working jib, even taking the 'more favorable' counter clockwise route, we did a lot of upwind sailing coming back out from deep within fjords and sounds, and on the northeast part of the island. Often in winds >20kts.

best,

Adam

OOOH!

I bought a used jib from Minnies.  It's a little short on the hoist by a coupla feet, but otherwise fits fine.
I decided for racing to go back and repair my original jib after all, so this one is now surplus!  I paid Minnies $800 for the sail.

Could easily ship from SF area.
