Has anyone ever gone head to head with a C&C 44 and/or have any insight on a J44 versus C&C 44?

Check the PERF rating. I think the J-44 has to give time to the C&C

Per Jboat site the J44 rating is 27  https://jboats.com/59-boats/boats/117-j-phrf-performance-analysis

Avg C&C 44 rating is 66 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%26C_44#:~:text=The%20fixed%20keel%2Dequipped%20C%26C,66%20and%20low%20of%2048.

The J/44 is a much faster more powerful boat.  If you want a cruising version of the J/44 then go with the J/46.

Cheers,

Bernie

There is a C&C 44 in my club that we race against regularly. Both boats are rated PHRF 72.

In light and heavy wind, we are significantly faster. In medium air, the boats are comparable. My boat probably has better sails. Where the C&C suffers is in waterline length, which is only 35'.

I can only imagine the J/44 would be much faster.

What did you have in mind, Chris? Are you racing? Cruising?

I've sailed a J35 for years, but the design brief for our next boat is fast for me, comfortable for my wife. And I don't mind standing headroom down below, minimum 6'3". We had to pass on the many J40/42s/120s for sale nearby due to the head room problem. That takes us to J44/46. None to be found near me. And the 46 breaks the budget. But, I've found four C&C 44s for sale here (Washington State). Helps the budget rather than hurts it. But I like a light wind boat for the Puget Sound, and I can't give up on my big J boat aspiration. My first keel boat was a C&C so I have a bit of that DNA too.

It would be a fair question to ask when I would notice the difference. I like our winter race season- cold and wet. I really don't want to be past by J35s in light air, as I liked to do to bigger boats. The Swiftsure will be in the cards. But let's say racing is less than 20% of the use. The rest is pre-retirement in the Salish Sea with a little more time on my hands as work winds down (enhanced by Covid).

I have a friend that has a j/35 him and his wife sailed it around the world in a group of other boats of which one was a j/160 . My friend an innumerable times would email me “beat him again!”.  Guess I’m saying its not the rifle but the marksman who hits the bullseye…

I doubt you'll be passing many J/35s in light air, but the C&C comes alive around 10kn. If head room is important, I think you'd be happy with it.
