I am interested in a J44 that needs a steering cable per the owner. Does any one know if this is a standard Teleflex and part number or measurements. The owner is not at the boat site, so I can not get pictures. Can someone please take pictures of their system so I can get an idea?

If the throttle and gear  shift has not been changed I wo check that also. The  steering will come from the manufacturer of the so possibly Edson  .

J/44 #33 has Edson, steering cables can be replaced with any quality cable and nicro-pressed onto the chain on the binnacle end and the tensioner eyes on the quadrant end. Edson would no doubt be able to set you up also.

Folks,

I've searched the archives and not found a direct answer to the question posed here: has anyone installed a line cutter, in my case a "shaft shark," on one of these boats? I ask because the instructions specify that the best placement is just ahead of the prop, but on my 42 there's precious little space between the prop and the strut/cutlass bearing holding the shaft. If I put it just ahead of the prop, it may restrict water flow through the bearing, and in any case it's closer than recommended by the instructions. Wondering whether the cutter may be more effective ahead of that strut, which puts it pretty far from the prop itself..

Cheers,

Bill J/42 #71 Hotspur

We have one on our J/46. It is right in front of the prop and it needs to be there as that is closest to where a line could wrap and cause trouble.

Hi Bill,
We have had a Spurs cutter installed on SV Sandpiper, J42 #32, for 23 years with no issues, sailing in the PNW. Once a year, when replacing anodes, we replace the Spurs zinc at the same time. It is a tiny triangular zinc, about the size of your little fingertip.
It is installed just forward of our 3-blade Max prop classic, between the strut and the prop. We replaced our cutlass bearing for the first time, last winter. It was shot, but we don't think the line cutter had contributed to its wear.

Before heading for MX in 2014, we installed a Shaft Shark on our J/42 aft of the cutlass strut and ahead of a 3-bladed 19" MaxProp. There was enough clearance for water to flow through the cutlass bearing.

A replacement Shaft Shark was installed in 2021 when the orginal's teeth had lost their aggressive sharpness.
