I have been using tmux with iterm2 for a while and I have been using scripts that use the tmux command "break-pane" and "split-window". t cause a new  tab or pane to appear in. my iterm window. however  what I really want is a new window to appear, much like command-n as opposed to command-t.

Is there a way for the remote end to ask for a new window as opposed to a new tab in the current window?

and my second request,

You made the relative timestamp option which is really great but it has a downside which is that any trealtive ime over a minute can not be seen because they just get rounded to "1 minute"  but my requirement is to compare instance which are often in the  03:00 - 03:59  seconds scale, which both show up as "3 minutes". Is there an option to show these in the "+00:03:35". form,  that I missed? I have looked but not seen one.

thanks

Julian

For tmux windows: Yes — go to Settings → General → "When opening tmux:" and choose "Open in native windows." Combined with the Advanced setting anonymousTmuxWindowsOpenInCurrentWindow (set to No), tmux-initiated new windows (break-pane, new-window) will create new iTerm2 windows.

Note this only applies to new tmux windows. split-window creates a new tmux pane, which is logically attached to the same tmux window: those will always render as a split within the same iTerm2 tab. If you want a separate iTerm2 window, the script should use new-window (or break-pane after split-window) instead of split-window.

As for timestamps, commit eb00395ff2ef3fde9b3a3b429786f46d2045da8c adds second precision for time differences in the minutes range. You can verify in tomorrow’s nightly build.

You never fail to amaze.
thanks George, for both the advice and the timestamp change.
