Dear board,
I'm submitting a project proposal for conducting a training program in developing countries on open software, standard, data, hardware for collecting weather data to combat climate change.

This is perfectly in line with the open geoscience committee activity.

The call for partners got unexpected feedback, and the available budget won't let me cover Nepal and Ethiopia.

I was wandering if OSGeo could sponsor this initiative with 5000 USD that will cover the cost of equipment to conduct workshops.
Don't know if from marketing or open geoscience or other.

Due to very very close deadline I wandered if I could have any feedback in a few days.

OSGeo will get highest visibility and more members in the community.

Looking forward for any feedback.

Best,
Maxi

Hi Maria,
the idea is the dissemination of the outputs of this project: www.4onse.org

The project will conduct:

1- training of one week in Indonesia, Morocco, Kenya, Vietnam, Nepal and Ethiopia to selected people from Universities.
During the training a new automatic open weather station will be built and data collected and share using OGC SOS standard and istSOS open source software

2- each country will localize the course and conduct the same training to about 60 people (and build additional 3 stations to be then deployed)

3- an open community will be created on open weather monitoring (could be part of OSGeo Open Geoscience or connected with)

The money from OSGeo should cover part of the costs for the equipment to be used during the training in local (particularly for Nepal and Ethiopia), otherwise they won't have funds to run this part (point 2).

I hereby guarantee that all the fund from OSGeo will support only the developing countries and the equipment necessary to conduct training and that OSGeo will get the highest visibility.

As a side effect, I also believe that this will help in expanding the istSOS community, as project of the OSGeo family.

Hope this better clarify.

Best,
Maxi

Hi Massimiliano,

Can you share some links and some details on how and when the money will be used? Is it for this year's budget or next year's?

We always try to delegate the budget on initiatives and projects instead of the board deciding micro-management. So if you can fit on any initiative or project that want to check and monitor money usage that would be easier for us to make the decision.

Thanks,
María.

Keep in mind our mandate is to support open source, so the istSOS user community development is on topic (not so much supporting developing countries and equipment purchasing). The board does have some budget to support istSOS and other OSGeo community projects.

For events and community activities like this we want a clear budget and so on:

I encourage you to reach out to the marketting committee and geoscience committee concurrently as you have already identified some ideas in that direction.
