VedaBase/Windows 10 Incompatibility

BAD NEWS: When you try to close Folio (the VedaBase) program under Windows 10, it simply hangs up. Then you have to go through the inconvenience of using the Task Manager to force it to close.

right, I'm having this since I switched to Windows 10 three months ago. I wasn't sure if others also have this problem and since Vedabse does its job so far I tolerated this bug. Of course for mass of people there has to be ultimately a better solution. Actually just from my feeling Vedabase seems to require some total refurbishment from scratch - looks like outdated software?

According to <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folio_Corporation>, "On February 10, 2010, Rocket Software released Folio Views ... version 4.7.2, the first release of Folio to officially support Windows Vista and Windows 7 32/64-bit." But how to get our hands on a copy is a mystery.

Let's hope that either the Bhaktivedanta Archives people come up with a solution or that it's a problem with Windows 10 that Microsoft will soon fix.

Windows 10 has an extra application to modify old software even up to Windows xp era. Just enable compatibility mode on this particular software to make it run correctly. find the main .exe file or shortcut you use to the application, right click it and select Properties, click: Run this program in compatibility mode for. Now, select the version of Windows that this application was designed to run on (you can use trial and error and see if it runs better under various scenarios). Once you are done, click OK. Actually I did this with lots of old software even Adobe Photoshop 6  runs perfectly on Windows 10. Actually Vedabase is only freezing when you click ending the program - so long you don't press exit button it works on my machine.

Might be similar bug like recently with Notepad, "A critical issue (hanging on exit) and a regression (JavaScript is not recognized in HTML document) have been fixed in 6.7.9.1 release."

I have seen the Prabhupadanugas in India use an updated Version of the Folio which had the original books.

As soon as I get back to India I will get back to you.

I did a Video how to install the Vedabase 2003 on Windows 10 Preview and the Bug that vedabase crashes only occurs in the Windows 10 Final.

If it worked OK in the Windows 10 Preview edition, then maybe they'll be willing to fix the problem. How do we complain to Microsoft about it?

Microsoft is such a big company that they will hardly deal with customer complaints.

They just get the automated bug reports from the error reporting service and maybe if a problem is affecting millions of users they do something about it.

Just like google is is difficult to contact the support and in cause we would do that they will most likely tell us that is is the fault of the Folio Views Software.

But there is definitely an updated version of the folio available.

I have seen it with my own eyes in india.

So let's see if we can get it.

Just install it, open it and use it to open the 2015 .nfo update from http://bhaktivedantaarchives.blogspot.co.nz/ - and go to the file menu and create a .nfl shortcut. Then cut and paste to that shortcut to anywhere on your computer and right-click and go Send to Desktop (create shortcut). The 4.11 version works perfectly in Windows10... ;-)

Prabhu,

     Have installed the 2003 Vedabase without any compatibility in Windows 10 and it closes properly. Just can't export to wrapped txt file without diacritics. Can export to unwrapped txt file however and wrap the text using Notepad++ :-)

                Namaste! Pranams! AGTSP! Thanks so much for that because the previous version wouldn't work on Linux using Wine. I found a tutorial video and now have the Vedabase, with 2019 update, working in Linux Mint using Wine. The previous version did install okay on Windows 11 so not doubt the updated version will also work okay. Much appreciated!!! I was using Cro$$over from Codeweavers but don't need that anymore. Jai! Saves some $$$!

In the 2019 version you can no longer search with brackets, e.g. "no more sannyasis". You have to click on keyboard control 1 to open a window, see link. There you can then enter a whole sentence to be searched for. In the 2002 version you could use brackets e.g. enter "no more sannyasis".

            Pranams! AGTSP! As for computers reading the Bhaktivedanta Vedabase, Read Aloud can read the online (unicode) Vedabase reasonably well with Google's English (India) WaveNet voices. They allow limited free usage per month. No need to phonetically edit the Vedabase. Jai! Hurray Krishna!

FYI, Crossover for MacOS installs the 2003.1 version of the Vedabase from the Download directory and can then be updated to the 2019 version by replacing the .nfo and .sdw files with the 2019 versions provide in the 2019 Vedabase version. The unicode feature can be added as for Windows. Jai!! AGTSP!

What I noticed: The vedabase unicode plugin only works on vedabase 2003 if Font is set to Balarama under Options. Otherwise I get an error
