Hi all, here’s the answer to the question you’ve been holding your breath on:

“How long does it take to get a ham radio license plate for your car?”

Jim Potter W7JNP and I applied for new plates at about the same time.

  • It took me 12 weeks from the time DOT cashed my check on Sept 1st.
  • It took Jim 7 weeks from the time DOT cashed his check on Sept 23rd.

Your mileage will vary. For some unknowable reason, Jim received his vanity plate two weeks before mine, although he entered his application about three weeks after me. Go figure.

Anyway, my VHF rover van is now properly badged. I’m happy.

Barry,
You referred to your new plates as "vanity plates". My plates are called "Ham Radio plates". There is no annual fee. There is a special form and I have send them  copy of my ham license the first time and every time it is renew the ham license. Are they doing it differently now?

I just ordered a Kia Niro EV.

I could apply for a matching plate.

Thanks for the idea.

John, I used the term “vanity plates” very casually. I have a vanity callsign and end up thinking if the license plates the same way. As you say, they really are ham radio plates and it was only a one-time $40 or so.

Good. I'm glad it didn't change. That is what I was hoping.

Take care,

Joe,
My son was an early adopter.
He will have had his Niro EV for two years, as of next month.  He commutes from Maple Valley to Olympia, .
and is very happy with the car.  The Auburn dealership does not support them very well, but Lee Johnson ( Kirkland)  has been very supportive.
