Hello,

I am Silvia Garaycochea, a researcher  from the  National Institute of Agricultural Research from Uruguay.  I want to use the soil data available in Wosis.

In order to obtain the data that I need, I download the WoSIS files : wosis_201909_layers_chemical.tab and wosis_201909_layers_physical.tab. I downloaded them using the WoSIS_Snapshot_With_R.Emd script where the first step is to download the files, so I think the files were obtained correctly. But those files have a high percentage of missing data, which prevents me from being able to use them for the analysis that I plan to do. On the other hand, if I look at the same coordinate, in which there is no data in the wosis tables, on the SoilGrid website there are values for chemical and physical properties and they do not appear in the wosis table. Is there any way to lower these values in an automated way? Are the values that appear in the SoilGrid real measurements or imputations with values according to soil type or geographical proximity?
Thank you very much
Regards
Silvia

Dear Silvia,

Thanks for your question.

WoSIS is a compilation of soil profile data shared by a wide range of contributors. Inherently, there will be gaps in the data, see https://www.isric.org/explore/wosis/faq-wosis.

The WoSIS point data together with a range of covariate data have been used to create soil property maps for the world at 250m resolution using digital soil mapping. See https://www.isric.org/explore/soilgrids/faq-soilgrids. These are continuous surfaces. In data scarce regions, uncertainty of the predictions is prone to be greater. For a visualization please see https://soilgrids.org/.

For additional details, please see https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-12-299-2020 (WoSIS) and https://doi.org/10.5194/soil-7-217-2021 (SoilGrids250m).

You are welcome to contribute soil data from your region to the WoSIS effort for the greater benefit of the international community (see https://www.isric.org/explore/wosis/wosis-contributing-institutions-and-experts

Best wishes,

Niels Batjes
