Women’s Surnames – Challenges and Issues in Genealogical Research

For genealogical researchers, uncovering a person’s name is the first milestone in tracing their ancestry. When it comes to women, however, we often know of their existence only through their familial connections — “mother of,” “daughter of,” “wife of,” or
“the rabbi’s daughter’s husband,” and so on. Therefore, discovering women’s maiden names within our families can be a particularly challenging process. This lecture will explore both theoretical and practical approaches to uncovering women’s identities in
genealogical research.
Dr. Lea Haber-Gedalia is a professional genealogist with 20 years of experience researching families and communities for family tree construction, citizenship applications, and heir tracing. Over
the years, she has held various positions in the Israeli Genealogical Society (Eilam), delivered lectures and courses in multiple settings, documented several cemeteries worldwide, and was responsible for establishing numerous community websites as part of
JewishGen’s KehilaLinks project.
