I am sorry to report the passing away, at the Tel Hashomer hospital, of Saul B. Groen, the founder of the legendary music and bookshop specialised in early music.

Saul was Dutch, and his Amsterdam shop was a dream, was like a luna park for early music people. It was the first music shop specialised in early music in the world.
He  had  nearly everything, and when he didn’t have what one needed,  he took the pains to search and get it.
I started to order from Saul’s shop in the 70’s, when I still lived in Brazil. For decades, he provided early music to scores and books to everyone, to all the orchestras and early music groups around the globe.

Everything about Saul's shop (and about himself) was sophisticated, even the way how the music was wrapped, and the paper which wrapped it, which Saul had a designer making, inspired in an early model.
He also edited an important collection of early Dutch Music.
For many years he had a music hall in his home, where he organised concerts, where all the early music community played. It was great fun.
The photo below was taken in early 1992, when I performed a recital with harpsichordist Edmundo Hora (at my left) there.

Many ignore that Saul was the nephew of the late Marc Roselaar, the first gambist in Israel.

I will write more earlier, and will inform the time and place of burial here, in Israel.
He will be missed, he was a great character, and he did a lot for the early music movement.

I fully agree.  Many years ago, when I was still active as baroque violinist, I took lessons with the great violinist Jaap Schroder, staying with my family in Amsterdam, and then I visited Saul Groen's store many times.  It was a revelation for me, sitting and going through huge piles of baroque music in fine editions.  At that time I also performed with Mark Roselar, whom I still remembered from his recitals with Franc Pelleg at the old Tel Aviv Museum.  This far away history put the foundations for the flourishing early music scene in Israel nowadays.
