Another of our pioneers has left us: Robert Grove. He suffered a major stroke in late April, and functional recovery was not achievable. When this became apparent, he was content with his fate. He was 83. Back in 2019 he wrote up some reflections on his life, and it makes one weary just to read it all. In his life story we see the evolution of the biofeedback and neurofeedback fields by way of one man’s chaotic journey through the terrain. What comes through so strongly is the passion that drove him throughout, retooling himself again and again to take on new challenges. From his notes:

"We pioneered biofeedback techniques for different headaches, and for the cold-extremity rapid vasoconstriction episodes in Raynaud's. At the end of this study, we were honored to watch while a group of Raynaud’s patients played tennis at the VA in the early-morning cold. None of them got cold hands any more!

I spent a little time in Germany with an old friend from my time in Westwood, Elmar Weiler. He had a 14-year-old who was in a coma. Nothing could wake him up. I used my EEG device to tell when his arousal was higher, and prompted his family to talk to him only then. He awakened in hours and stayed awake. We were all impressed.

Rick Rickles and I became founding members of the California Biofeedback Society [1974]. I remained a member for almost 50 years. I was elected president 3 times.

In retrospect, I think all my efforts were inspired by growing up in the 1960s.  My generation, the ‘60s generation, was really optimistic about making the world a better place through the application of good science."

Not mentioned was the fact that Robert was one of the three people who launched the SSNR in 1993. Ken Tachiki—who was not involved in neurofeedback at all—visited our clinic and realized that neurofeedback had a future. We were keeping three systems running with two clinicians supporting Sue Othmer. He then joined forces with Len Ochs and Robert Grove to launch the SSNR.

Thank you for this beautiful account. And sorry if this already exists, but we should establish a Biofeedback Hall of Fame and archives with important biographical information and prominent research on the ISNR website for public records. It would be awesome if anyone could see the early work that has led us to where we are today in one click. This would be especially wonderful for students but also to link these pioneers together in scientific history. I know there are books out there, but an official online resting place feels appropriate for all of the giants whose shoulders we stand on.

Bonnie - this is an excellent idea- those that have acheived outstanding career acheivements and contributions to all of us should be memorialized on the websites as a way of honoring them -

Some of this is happening. Fred Shaffer has been putting something like this together. AAPB has a growing biographical library of people in our field. NRBS has a similar project which is coming together, although focused on its own history.

Perhaps a little coordination is in order?

Good idea or a separate website that links to all of these entities who are working on it but that the history stands alone and we all are segmented parts of it, since neurofeedback, biofeedback and experimental research are all important components.

I couldn't agree more, Saul. ISNR will reach out to NRBS, AAPB, and Fred Shaffer to coordinate efforts on this.

Thank you Saul,

My life is very busy, but I would be interested in being involved, but not to the degree it interrupts other projects I am working on. It would be amenable to me to discuss involvement and outline this so I know what it might entail and then I can budget my time for it.
