"We pioneered biofeedback techniques for different headaches, and for the cold-extremity rapid vasoconstriction episodes in Raynaud's. At the end of this study, we were honored to watch while a group of Raynaud’s patients played tennis at the VA in the early-morning cold. None of them got cold hands any more!
I spent a little time in Germany with an old friend from my time in Westwood, Elmar Weiler. He had a 14-year-old who was in a coma. Nothing could wake him up. I used my EEG device to tell when his arousal was higher, and prompted his family to talk to him only then. He awakened in hours and stayed awake. We were all impressed.
Rick Rickles and I became founding members of the California Biofeedback Society [1974]. I remained a member for almost 50 years. I was elected president 3 times.
In retrospect, I think all my efforts were inspired by growing up in the 1960s. My generation, the ‘60s generation, was really optimistic about making the world a better place through the application of good science."
Not mentioned was the fact that Robert was one of the three people who launched the SSNR in 1993. Ken Tachiki—who was not involved in neurofeedback at all—visited our clinic and realized that neurofeedback had a future. We were keeping three systems running with two clinicians supporting Sue Othmer. He then joined forces with Len Ochs and Robert Grove to launch the SSNR.
