Cheri: if you can  help me please advise. My fathers parents were from a Madeira and the Azores. I need to take the most sophisticated tests from both groups to determine my ancestry. Specifically/ am I linked to Jewish ancestry?

Please advise to I can register ASAP.  I have never tested before and I’ve been advised there Are-more expensive tests than introductory offers that provide more incisive information.

Thank you.

Joanne M,

If your father (or one of his brothers) alive? If so, order a Y-37 or Y-111 on him. That will trace his father's father's line only. Add on Family Finder as well.

If you have no father or uncle available, you will have to find a nephew or a male cousin whose father's father's father's line is the same as yours. Test that male with a Y-37 or Y-111.

Other than that, you can take a Family Finder test. Or if you dad has any living sisters, test them with Family Finder.

The Family Finder test may tell you if you have some Jewish if it was not that far back. If your father's father's father's line was Jewish the haplogroup might come back as one of the J haplogroups. That one goes back forever in time.

Cheri- thank you for your quick response.
So if I understand this correctly, for me to identify my fathers Azorian lineage I need I to find a male cousin who is the son of an uncle (my fathers’ brother) in order to utilize the Big y 700?

I have one male Portuguese cousin but his mother is my Aunt, so I’m assuming this is not helpful?

Correct. In order to identify your father's Azorean lineage, you need that male cousin who is the son of the uncle (the brother of your father) in order to utilize the Big Y-700

The male Portuguese cousin whose mother is your aunt will not work for Big Y. It has to be an unbroken line of males, the whole time. But if you speak of your father's mother and that male Portuguese cousin is her son, you could do the mtDNA Full Sequence, tracing the mother's mother's mother's line all the way back in time. It's the bottom of your pedigree chart.

Since these are 2 different cousins, you would need to order 2 different tests.

Hope this helps,

Cheri- you are so helpful- one more question please! You said the following/

My One male Portuguese cousin, is the Grandson of my Portuguese Grandmother from Madeira. Not her son- so do I ask him to swab for the Big Y- 700? And I will Swab for the family finder as well.

Am I on track?

Joanne,

It gets to be confusing when we go off on your paternal grandmother's grandson from Madeira. Put your cousin as the main person in your genealogy program, do a pedigree view and screenshot it for me. Email it directly to gfscherim at gmail.com. Then I can say yes or no.

Thanks!
