Asset identifiers - who's using them?

Hello all,

We've been discussing possible improvements for the IOOS Metadata Profile, and we came across the section on asset identifiers (see https://ioos.github.io/conventions-for-observing-asset-identifiers/ioos-assets-v1-0.html for reference). 

It seems like they were once used for IOOS web services, and/or the sensor maps in data portals. I'm not sure if that is still the case. 

Bottom line is, are asset identifiers are still relevant? Is anybody using them? Have they been deprecated?

It would be great to have input from the community on this matter.

Hi Ana,

They have not be deprecated, yet.... Should they be? We (IOOS) are also interested in understanding how the community might be using these asset identifiers.

Yes, they remain relevant -- we use the syntax to generate URNs for stations/platform.
