Hello all,

My name is Bernard, and I am the Assistant Program Director at Alameda Community Sailing Center.

I've recently received interest from a few people about chartering ILCAs and joining our fleet at ACSC on Thursdays or Sundays. With that in mind, I wanted to check in and see if  any of you might be open to sailing alongside individuals who are interested in learning how to race ILCA dinghies.

This wouldn’t be anything formal—just a matter of keeping an eye out to make sure they’re sailing safely and getting back to the yard without any issues.

Please let me know if you are interested with sailing with a chartered ILCA sailor, and I can put you in contact with enthusiastic sailors!

Thanks for your time!

Hi Bernard,

First off, I want to give you a round of applause for providing such a wonderful place for us to sail. Those of us lucky enough to live within range of ACSC appreciate your support!

My name is Jonathan Howell. I am a US Sail Certified Instructor and recently re-joined the ILCA fleet. My own answer to your question is a very emphatic “of course!” I honestly would have a difficult time NOT providing advice to someone that may be struggling to sail or is just needing a few pointers for improvement.

That said, it’ll be a few weeks before I can make it to ACSC with my Laser. I’ll introduce myself the next time I come by.

I would echo what Jonathan said, having newbies learning to race with more experienced sailors helps them get up to speed sooner, probably helps to motivate them, and gives all of us a chance to grow the fleet, meet new friends, etc.

ACSC is particularly ideal for our area since it tends to be warm on shore, it is usually not too windy, the course is pretty even, etc. So really ideal for people to hone their skills before graduating to the more challenging venues our area has to offer.
