Disappearing mouse behaves better with ip addresses

Hi Shane,

I noticed that if I use ip references for my connected systems as opposed to network names, the mouse behaves much better.

Interestingly, when playing around with the layout and settings, when I tried to change one system from an ip address to network name, InputDirector told me that the computer was already represented by another (different) named machine. It seems that either my network is troubled (which I haven't noticed until this situation) or InputDirector is having trouble using network names and assigning the appropriate ip address.

On my network, my router assigns ip addresses based on the MAC addresses of each computer. The ip assignments are always the same and predictable for each machine. The same router assigns a name to each respective machine. So I'm not sure why InputDirector gets confused.

I find that sticking with IP addresses that are reserved (such as via DHCP like in your router) always works better.  My AT&T fiber router lost the hostname for several weeks of one of my systems that I leave on 24/7.  But then again, I'm not in complete control of that router since they can decide to update its firmware whenever they want or add or take away features.  An alternative would be to add the IPs and names & aliases of other systems on each system's "hosts" file.  In Windows this is located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. FYI, editing it sometimes requires elevation, i.e. running Notepad as admin first.

Update on this. If you attach a mouse to each client computer, the disappearing mouse seems to never occur—at least so far on my setup.

Hi Clifton,

Which version of Windows is running on the client? Input Director should be enforcing the cursor being displayed on systems, without a mouse connected, running Windows 10/11.

Hi Shane,

Windows 10 on all machines. Just seems like connecting a real mouse on each system works better for my setup. This is not really a problem as sometimes when a system has trouble I have to connect one anyway to do maintenance, etc. Keeping a keyboard connect doesn't matter as long as I set the BIOS on the computer to bypass keyboard (not present) errors.
