ID of a fruiting tree

Hello friends,

 

I would like to know ID of this tree ... attached 2 photographs ... both of the same tree at Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary shot between Dec 06, 2008 and Jan 17, 2009.

Sorry..............it just slipped through. I meant to say the pods look like those of SALAI (Boswelia serrata) and not Moi(Lannea)Look in the attached picture

... the fruits look different ... in general is quite close.

Just in case, a lone torn leaf and trunk can help us get closer ... here are its photos.

I agree that it is not Gmelina. I had thought that the fruit shown might be flower buds. Sorry for the confusion.  I do not know this tree.

It could be silk cotton. The bark looks like it so does the fruits
(pods). To me it looks like the silk cotton pods and not fruit.

Yazdy, those fruits are no longer than 2 cm.

Hello friends,
This plant turns out to be Hymenodictyon obovatum ... many thanks to my botanist friend - Hemanth Tripathi !!!

Perhaps endemic to Western Ghats of India, rarely found in the Eastern Ghats.

And could be also native to Madagascar.

 

Elsewhere, it could be H. orixense (popular synonym: H. excelsum) which is similar in many aspects; however a larger tree, rounded canopy, reflexed capsules instead of the the erect in case if H. obovata.

 

 

Commonly known as: obovate-leaved bridal-couch plant

 • Kannada: ಬೋಗಿಮರ bogimara, ಹೀರೆಮರ hiremara

 • Konkani: सिरीद sirid

 • Malayalam: കിലുങ്ങിമരം kilungimaram

 • Marathi: कडवा शिरीद kadva shirid

 • Tamil: மலைத்தணக்கு malai-t-tanakku

I have came across the same tree

today at Sagargad Alibag and  could manage to photographed

the dried leaf and capsule type fruits but when I gone through

the ref.book (Forest Trees of South India, by S.G.Neginhal )

I noticed that it is a H.orixense (Mar.name:Bhorsal) instead of

H.obovatum.

As per above said ref.book H.obovatum"s leavs are suddenly

acuminate while H.orixense has broadly ovate leavs

You must be correct, Pravin.

My friend Hemanth (botanist) too strongly maintains it to be H. excelsum (it is yet a popular name, H. orixense is current).

 

Finally, Hymenodictyon orixense !!!

Dear Pravin, re-surfacing this thread, requesting you to validate the Marathi name bhorsal -- would it be भोरसळ ?

 

Besides bhorsal, other Marathi names found to be appropriate are: कंबळ kambal, and a generic name कुडा kuda.
