Both trees are classified as part of the Malvaceae family, and both exhibit obvious floral characteristics of that family. Thespesia has a seed capsule that is a flattened disc ringed with seeds, and Hibiscus tileaceus has the classic Hibiscus seed capsule, "heart" shaped and five-chambered.
