Dear members,
Saroj ji has been becoming Most Interactive Person/ Star Expert every month without fail from July'16 to July'19, for more than past three years, without fail. This is a feat which nobody has achieved so far.
When our Stalwarts like G. Singh ji, Dinesh ji, Balkar ji, Tanay ji, Nidhan ji, Aarti ji, Ushadi, Surajit ji, Pankajji etc. have taken some rest, Saroj ji has come up like anything. He never allowed us to feel their vacuum.
He showed us the path like others mentioned before. He showed us how beautifully images can not only be captured but also posted. In his images, we can see very fine details required for complicated ids. His output of images on efi will not be less than 30,000 images, if my guess is correct. However, Saroj ji may give us a better estimate.
Now he has taken upon himself to look into each post and suggest appropriate ids.
His retirement has been a boon to efloraofindia.
He is like a brightest star now in the sky. I have no better words than this to highlight his outstanding contribution in the building of efloraofindia.

Thank you Mr. Garg for appreciation. However, I could achieve this feat with the ceaseles guidance
from pioneers and stalwarts of this group like yourself, Nidhan Sir, Gurucharan Sir, Dinish Ji, Rawat Ji,
Pankaj, Tapas Da, Ritesh ji, Manoj Ji and all other members. Time again I have been receiving
suggestions from many seniors to capture the images in a proper way so as to cover all aspects of
plants. I agree that I am one of the most junior to join this group and still trying to improve myself.

Thank you all once again from my core of heart

Very good
Ihave been impressed with great improvement in photography and its quality.
the watershed timeline for that in my mind at least was visit with Pankaj in Hong Kong
and Saroj ji's  retirement.  Great use of that time and new macro lens etc.

Congratulations.

Congratulations Saroj ji, wish those Golden days are back when group had contributions by all on a large scale. Although group is now doing more productive job of updating the website and making it useful for general public, but I wish we also devote our energy to using the talent of experts here for adding new species to our database. I tried to do it a few times, but found that whereas same post received more than 100 responses in my Facebook Groups, it did not receive a single reply even for several days. We have to do something to keep group active among members, not just few exchanges among moderator group.

I think it was not a good move to stop family/genus weeks/months. Most members find Facebook more convenient. It may be difficult to bring them back. Please suggest some concrete steps. At least we the moderate group can make a new beginning.

Thanks, Singh ji. for the valuable suggestions.
I agree with you. But the onslaught of Facebook and what's up has changed things dramatically.
I think more than 95% of the groups have been almost wiped out, due to the reason of numerous likes and quick feedback.
I once tried to appreciate all the posts, being posted in our group. But has to stop due to lack of time.

But we have some advantages also.
Although posts may not be appreciated with likes, but are incorporated in our site with images, for everybody in the world to use and appreciate them.
I did lot of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons work. But there was no direct appreciation in form of likes etc.
But it still stays like this and being used all over the world. I am more than happy with my contributions.

So the choice is left over to members- whether they want likes or they want their work to be constructively used in the website and appreciated by all over the world, albeit without their knowledge.
So we have our pool divided. Some will like to post both on the Facebook and efi group. Some will like only Facebook, while some others may like only efi group.
Choice is theirs. Nobody can change it except they themselves.

However, I wish our members and experts help us in enriching our database more and more, along with helping in our ids.
If somebody can find way and means to get them more involved, it will be really wonderful and appreciable.

Agree with you Garg ji.

I for one donot want  FACEBOOK
NO whats up
no hankering after  likes
no temporary feel good....

we at efloraindia/indiatreepix are going in the correct direction
with a website and a way to follow up
and getting references , etc

Gurcharanji, thats our strength

i was hoping you will agree.

Facebook is being deleted by most academicians i know from their repertoire of communication.

in the past i tried looking in that group and similar ones, most of the partakers are happy with half baked ideas it seemed,
i am sure there are exceptions like you in that group, still....  not a very long reaching long lasting endeavor.  waste of time.

regards

my own page Flora of Nepal. However, I feel FB posts are just for fun and not so serious
like efi.

Thank you all for the appreciation !

in the past i tried looking in that group and similar ones, most of the partakers are happy with half baked ideas it seemed,

Thanks Gargi ji, Ushadi who is always frank coming from her heart and Saroj ji. Our immediate focus is how to revive our interactions. To me the best solutions looks like reviving Genus/Family Fortnights. To avoid unnecessary repetitions let us first make a list of genera/families well represented in India, and which have not been covered in our group. I am sure it will help in enriching and adding new species to our database.
   Please do suggest such genera/families

one case i point here is an example of mindless game they play :
Thread was "Fwd: Photo from Jampanicsrao Rao

and he  the sender is a prof of botany
Dr. J. Chandrasekhara Rao
Department of Botany
Andhra Loyola College(Autonomous)
VIJAYAWADA - 520 008

read the thread and see the futility of the social media

what a waste and inanity.
he just forwarded a photo, and even after i asked where did it come from, ie which of his friends had sent it,
no interest in tracking, who sent him the photo, he says he told them the identity.......    he a botany professor
repeating my guess?????  as a identification.   no give and take of history etc, .  just blatant misuse...

then AArti had the same photo sent to her and she told them diagnosis based on what i had guessed based on one
history less postcard type photo...

what ???? a waste  is such  social media groups.

Dear Saroj ji
I think you have not understood the power of Facebook groups while making this statement
" However, I feel FB posts are just for fun and not so serious like efi."
I have been travelling USA for last 11 years, have shared many plants here also. This year I am visiting Canada also. Earlier it would take me several hours/days to identify a plant new for me looking at my Manual of Cultivated Plants, Hortus Third and Online databases like Japson Flora of California and eFlora website which has N. America plants also.  Now whenever I get any new plant, which I am not able to identify easily, I simply upload it to Facebook Group "Plant Identification" which has 1,70,000 members, and I get identification or a clue within few minutes, my database is getting updated very fast. I have passed through all phases since our first visit to Ladakh in 1970 when there was no public transport and we managed by hitchhiking rides from army vehicles, to our own University jeep in later years. Luckily I have learnt to keep pace with developing technology and make best use of recent facilities.

Correctly pointed out by Singh ji.
It is also helping us as some of our members get ids on Facebook and post these on efi group.
That is why almost 95 % of the groups have already been wiped out.

Dear Gurucharan Sir / Mr. Garg,

I agree with you but of late I have been posting for ID in 4/5 different pages
and I did not get any positive help for ID. However, I find it good for identified
species.

Thank you.

I do agree with Gurcharan ji - that social media is helpful to those seeking quick hints -- which is very helpful to quicken progress of one's study.

Speed of response to any post in social media, is at a very high level - as if somebody is / are staying alert enough to quickly give ID. Most of the times I have found the ID given by experts OR those familiar with plant, are accurate.

The downside, sometimes, is some people who are at a beginner or at a lesser level of knowing plants, are extra keen OR adamant to post their guesses (most often incorrect) despite comments with accurate ID have already been posted by expert(s). Thus, sometimes, I find there are too many uncontrolled posting that one has to tolerate. But as long as getting the ID or hints is concerned, facebook or any social medium is faster than any group or forum.

Another downside, in my opinion, is a post that is not responded to, because of any of several possible reasons, remains unanswered and goes down and gets cold. Scope of it resurfacing is almost zero.

Thus, advantage is getting extra quick response, and disadvantage is no facility to setup the posts in any systematic manner. One can only search and study whatever he / she seeks, in slightly tedious one-by-one post reading. And query if any posted in old posts, may not get a quick response compared to what one gets for a fresh post. But, all the disadvantages are absorbed for the sake of getting purpose fulfilled.

Personally, I am for social media to get quick response for conducting my study, and very strongly for group, to lay down my contributions in a concrete manner.

Yes Dinesh ji, totally agree with you. I have often written on Facebook groups that members should write alternate ID with specific comments but then you have to live with such naive members. Other extreme is Plant Identification where you can't repeat same ID or may be muted or expelled for irrelevant comment, urging you to be polite, but admins can (and do so) write any harsh comment, insult any member. We have to live with all this, because there are many good experts who can guide you in identifications.

Luckily I have learnt to keep pace with developing technology and make best use of recent facilities.

dear all:
very interesting

Gurcharanji
i also visit the plant id facebook page you mentioned from time to time w
hen i dont know what i just photographed esp in USA, Canada or Europe

several points of distinction though ....
A.....its an open page (unlike the one you folks started a few years ago )
B......no body there  insists  on species level id when the incomplete pictures
that are submitted (as often our members do) (it drives me nuts)..

C.....  there is no undue posts ..thank you etc to increase number of posts, esp when it makes no sense

D..... no repeating comments, (also  done here o increase number of posts....)

E.....and i suspect they are not allowed to post pictures of the same item ( from another site or another day)

i think that's why that group out of many is successful.
but their mission and long term goal is most likely different from our goal.s

so different strokes for different folks,
we have to live and let live
nobody's better than any body else.

that's all

Hi, Singh ji,
We have a lot of unidentified as well as wrongly identified images in our database.
In the current scenario, it will be better if the coordinator concerned looks into that genus or family at efi site and find out wrongly identified posts and correct them in efi group with relevant inf. along with identifying unidentified ones.
He can also forward the posts which he is not able to help with.
I am sure, he will also be able to add many new species to the database due to this exercise, while improving the accuracy of the database at the same time.
Last four days, I did this exercise for Hedyotis complex. And results are there on the group (as well site) for everyone to see.

It is certainly a good idea to revive our efloraofindia.
I agree that facebook is a good platform but what is happening on facebook is totally different from what is happening here. One biggest plus point of facebook is having members, not all but many of them are addicted, many of them show of their knowledge and many of them just copy paste. BUT, having said this, the message their reaches far beyond the message from our group can reach.
But I wish to see efloraofindia standing at same place as chinese virtual herbarium. Chinese Vertual herbarium and the flora of nepal website are very professional. Our is also professional, but facebook is not.
Please also remember that facebook is banned in China.
For a person like me who is less active these days due to lot of office work, its easy to say yes have the family fortnight or the genus fortnight. Still I would say, go for it.
I also understand that few of our stalwarts kind of went off the group due to some odd, disheartening messages from some members. But if you have tolerated me, I am sure you can tolerate him for some more time.
Rest is all to the top experts and active members of the group.
Best regards
