Hello friends

Saw this Hibiscus in a marshy area in Charkop, Mumbai, MH in October 2019.

Requested to please provide ID. Is this H. surattensis or H. hispidissimus or any other?

Thanks and regards

Saroj ji, I am not sure of the ID.

Is this H. surattensis?

I guess it looks  more close to H. hispidissimus but rather difficult to confirm it.

Thank you.

I too strongly think, it is Hibiscus hispidissimus.
... because the plant is densely pubescent ... description referred at Herbarium JCB.
versus H. surattensis - with sparse minute prickles, otherwise glabrous ... description referred at Herbarium JCB.

There are other differences too. Let us wait for more comments.
Regards.

Flora of China gives the following keys:
7 (6)Stipules auriculate; stem prickles without basal tubercle, curved. 20 H. surattensis
+Stipules narrowly lanceolate; stem prickles with prominent basal tubercle, straight. 21 H. hispidissimus

Based on the keys above and stipules seen in 1st image, it should be H. surattensis

Stem prickles are also without basal tubercle.

I checked all post in efi site at Hibiscus hispidissimus Griff. and Hibiscus surattensis L. - these seems to be OK. determination based on stem prickles may be confusing. So better to go with the stipules.

Keys in the book in Flora of Karnataka bases keys between the two only on Stipules and not on stem prickles.

Thanks Garg ji for resolving this. I think Rakesh ji too had suggested H. surattensis on FB.
