Thanks Usha di ... it is possible this plant is sold abroad, perhaps for ornamental purpose. It is one of edible Araceae members.

Found this plant in various places of Western Ghats, though not common. It rarely flowers, tiny bulbils borne on stolons do the work of reproduction ... more at Wikipedia.

Regards.

If it's edible then I think it is the same plant we have here in Himachal and make a savoury dish Patora from it. I always thought it belonged to yam/colocasia family. I will dig up some pictures and share them soon.

Thanks.

Ashwini ji, if you seen them as epiphyte, there is good chance that you are talking of same plant. This plant is distributed in Himalayas too. However the Himalayan regional names of this plant are not much known.
Will be glad to know of any name given to this plant in Himachal.

Regards.

I am sorry Dinesh ji, I think we are talking about different plants. The one I see here grows on the ground and doesn't flower. The leaves can become very large growing sometime to about 2-3 feet tall. The root as well as the leaves are edible. Hindi Kachalu, Local vernacular: Patroda.

I think it is Colocasia esculenta that we have here.

Ashwini

OK, Ashwini ji.
Incidentally, we (in Konkani) use the name patrodo for the dish made from Colocasia leaves !

Thanks Usha di.
Shrikant (Ingalhalikar) ji has been fortunate to see the flower in wilderness of Western Ghats - it is illustrated in his second book - Further Flowers of Sahyadri.

Mr. Vakle,
If its roots are addible then it is known as Ratalu in Hindi. Ratalu roots are rough brown with stiff blunt thorns on it. The flesh is deep pink, sometimes creamy.

Promila ji, ... ratalu looks like a generic name given to many plants - name especially referring to their tubers, most popular for Ipomoea batatas. Your description seems fitting for Ipomoea batatas.

Most probably Remusatia vivipara is not known as ratalu.
