It is with great sadness to let the birding community know that Dennis Marton passed away suddenly this past Tuesday. Services are being held tomorrow: https://www.smithcorcoran.com/obituaries/Dennis-P-Marton?obId=43557544

Dennis was not only an avid birder but key to the avian-based restoration efforts at LaBagh Woods Forest Preserve, providing invaluable leadership and mentoring there for over a decade. He will be sorely missed.

Thank you, Katy for sharing this information.

Dennis was a longtime volunteer at LaBagh Woods, with the restoration there as Katy mentioned, and helped compile and organize groups of birders to monitor the birds there also, and helped for many years participating and compiling the bird list for many Spring BIrd Counts and during the years of the Cook County Nesting Season Bird Census.

The Chicago Bird Alliance (Chicago Audubon Society) selected and awarded Dennis and his wife Linda, the 2022 Environmental Award for:

Protector of the Environment – Avocation (individual):
Dennis and Linda Marton

The following was noted at the Awards Celebration:

Dennis and Linda Marton have been involved in numerous activities to document the birds and other animals and plants at LaBagh Woods. They have organized the Spring Bird Count and Chicago Urban Christmas Bird Count, compiling the count data for LaBagh Woods and adjacent areas, and ensuring that it is accurate too. They have an extensive list of volunteers that they have gotten to help over the years. They also helped determine what species have nested at LaBagh Woods, in the Cook County Nesting Season Bird Census that CAS conducted for many years. And they spent hundreds of hours during COS' major project of restoration at LaBagh Woods. As members of the planning committee, they organized the volunteers' removal of invasive species, and planting of native shrubs and understory trees to enhance bird habitat.

{and even as late as this year, Dennis participated in the May 10, 2025 Illinois Spring Bird Count, finding and counting birds for a number of hours at Gomper's Park, and the area cemeteries, including St. Luke and the Bohemian National Cemetery)

Dennis definitely will be missed.

Sincerely,
Alan
