Hi, Everyone,

I wonder if I can increase the maximal RAM usage for IGV_2.10.2. My Mac contains a total 64GB RAM but I still suffer from slow or frozen situations when I use IGV to check RNA seq bam files (these sorted bam files are big though, with sizes ranges from 2GB to 5GB, my IGV visibility range threshold is set to 500 kb).  I guess I could solve this problem by increasing RAM limit for IGV (let's say from 4GB to 10GB).  I read posts from this forum and it seems I could change the RAM limit in the "info.plist" file in the IGV package. I found this file in the IGV package but I did not see a place which I can modify the maximal RAM limit.

I appreciate if anyone could give me an input in it.

Thanks,

Xiao

Hi Xiao,
(After you've run IGV at least once) you will find a file named java_arguments in a folder named .igv in your home folder. Note the "." at the beginning of the folder name.
While IGV is not running, edit the java_arguments file, and remove the # comment symbol to uncomment the -Xmx8G. That will increase the memory specification to 8G from the default 4G. Or you can increase the number even further.
