SDH&GIS or Geo-Intelligence Science

Dear Commission Members，

         SDH has long history and provided 18 very bright symposiums for the GIS community of our whole world. 

         According  to the development of Geographical Infomation Science and the new trends of the Science and Technologies of Human, espicallly, the integration of Big Data, Art Intelligence and Clouds, the Geographical Infomation Science(GIS) is developing to the Geographical Intelligence Science(GIS) which will guide the human being to build a new geographical world, which is a natural world compounded with man-made intelligence and its machine.

        In order to attract more young scientists to attend our Symposium of our commission of GIS and to make the Symposium more valuable and longer life,  I have a suggestion. 

        May we change the name of the symposium to "The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling and Geo-Intelligence Science(SDH&GIS)" or "The International Symposium on  Geo-Intelligence Science"?   Which one is better?

       It is appreciated that you can give more comments.

Sometimes changes are required and helpful, especially in vitrines (e.g. conferences) for  branding and presenting the advances.

Your suggestion is interesting and I prefer "The International Symposium on Spatial Data Handling and Geographic Intelligence Science (SDH&GIS)".

Dear Commission Members,

The points are well made and worth thorough consideration. Thank you. May I add a point to this discussion? GIS has evolved and will evolve. SDH has as well. It should continue to evolve too. I would that we consider the IGU roots and important relationship with all of international geography in considering the renaming. The commission has many international scientists involved. The linkage to IGU is not predominant for each scientists research, but the commission stands in relationship to the large and diverse scientific community. This relationship bears strongly on the continued relevance of the commission. 

In this light, I think retaining SDH is a connection of the past to the future via the present is important. I think further that GI distinguishes this commission from all other IGU commissions. Hence, I would suggest considering SDH&GI as symposium name. This name evokes the strong IGU relationship of the commission and its commitment to all approaches to geographic information science.

Hi, I agree that our group needs a name change but I am not in agreement with the suggested name. I never thought much of "Spatial Data Handling". "Handling' is a loose word in the english language and does not accurately reflect the analysis and science that we do. The problem with the term "Intelligence Science' is the connection it has to some poor science in the past on eugenics and the intelligence of different races. I also associate "Intelligence Science" with spying and evading people's privacy. The use of AI tools are still just a small part of what we do. "Geo" is also a bit vague and is associated with geology. Essentially what we do is mapping and spatial analysis and our name should reflect this using as few words as possible.  Unfortunately,  "mapping and spatial analysis" isn't sexy enough for the young generation. How about "Spatial Data and Geographical Intelligence" It goes without saying that we are doing science.
